I have scanned my computer using <scan.sygate.com (more scanning options on the left) and it reported 2 unknown ports open on my router plus my DNS TCP/UDP port open and all of my UDP ports returning as closed. My router also responds to ICMP Type 8 (Ping) which is another security problem I am having with it. The router is a Dynalink ADSL Router RTA020. I have gone to the NZADSL site and asked them if they knew how to secure my router but they had no idea how to. |

If you are polite and persistant you'll likely get an answer to your question there. Are you worried about being the victim of a DOS attack chewing up your monthly quota? If so, no firewall will help you anyway, only switching off your router or closing the PPP session can prevent this. As for having a few open ports, don't sweat it, as long as they're not dangerous ones you'll be fine. Plus you can always run a sissy 'personal' firewall on your internal machine if your worried. -I shouldn't say that, but I can't resist. I know there are a whole lot of Zone Alarm supporters on this site who like a good argument. :-) I see the DOS attack as the most dangerous type, as it requires no misconfiguration of your network for you to be a victim. |
