47392 2002-05-06 06:15:00 Now that I have tamed my temporary internet files directory down to a paltry figure, I was feeling smug and thinking I would slip something into what makes it into the magazine.

I just checked it again, and guess what? Up to 20,000+ files again already!!! And about 200Mb, but using more like 400 due to small size.

IE seems to be completely ignoring my settings for space. GROWL. I am not a happy camper.

Weird thing is, PC has been behaving very well lately.

whats the temp internet file set to? you could try cache sentry, it seems very good so far a getting rid of stray files. www.mindspring.com

i did try my setting the temp internet settings to 80 meg and IE went at a crawl. a lot better at 40.

47394 2002-05-06 08:33:00 I followed this discussion last time with interest and checked my setting which was set at 596mb and had 12,855 files/13 Folders - Now i noticed different people had diff. opinions as to what this should be set at - After reading all that was said i do feel this is too high and would like to know what is a good setting? Also i had trouble actually finding out how many files etc were there,(total mbs)i go view files and it shows ALL of the files but can't seem to find how many are there & how many mb worth in total - only way i was able to do it was go to disc cleanup and then i could see how many were there - it says that they are kept in : C\Documents&Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\ But i just can't seem to find them there, it seems so silly, i just can't work it out!! If anybody can tell me where i am going wrong i would appreciate it!! Just can't seem to get to the Local Settings! (The computer was at the shop a month or so back and had to be totally reset up and was a little different when it came back, and i am sure that local settings was easy to get to before) Anyway i am using win xp - once again any help appreciated! And advice on what to set it to. Thanks Guest (0)
47395 2002-05-06 08:44:00 What I did was (in IE), goto 'tools' - 'Internet Options' - click on 'Advanced' tab. Under Security, tick the 'Empty Temporary Internet Cache each time Internet Explorer is closed'. Some people may not like that because the pages you surf aren't cached and have to be readloaded each time you restart, but I don't mind. The cache empties itself and no space is wasted.

47396 2002-05-06 09:02:00 Maybe you should phone Jenny Craig, robo:)

Either do as Neuromancer suggests and set to empty the cache when IE closes, or try re-setting the cache size again. I wonder why it isn't remembering the setting?

I set the temp internet files cache size to 10MB, but frequently empty it as well.

Cheers

47397 2002-05-06 09:06:00 Hi J Zep
I forgot to say, in Win98 right click on the Temp Internet Files folder and choose properties, it gives number of files and total size. Maybe its similar in XP?

47398 2002-05-06 09:21:00 I had a similar problem to robo while trying to reduce the size of the temp file. I found that IE does not appear to like reducing. Try deleting everything first and then letting IE increase to your new size. Works on every computer I have tried this on. Guest (0)
47399 2002-05-06 11:34:00 Robo - if you go to the CacheSentry site as given by Tweak'e above in this thread you will find a lot of background info on cache management and IE's deficiencies in dealing with it. I am sure that that is where I read that Win Explorer provides a very distorted view of cache contents including heavy duplication. The recommendation for cache size given there when I last read it some time ago was 40 or 60mb. CacheSentry got a thumbs-up from someone on this site about a week ago. I have been using it since last year and found that the version I have (it may not now be up to date) clears the History and Favourites folders even though it is not supposed to. I get around this by renaming before running CS and changing them back afterwards. Guest (0)
47400 2002-05-06 13:33:00 Something that won't work!

I made the temporary internet folder read-only, my cookies and index.dat folder read-only and my history folder read-only. So after a week doing this I thought it was cool that there wasn't anything in those folders until I realised I hadn't cleaned my temp folder in a while.

To my surprise there was the secretly created cookies, history and temporary internet folder in my temp directory. Also suffering from the in use index.dat file.
