47366 2002-05-06 03:40:00 I am trying to remove windows messenger on windows xp pro. So far I haven?t had any luck, the only reference I can find to it is in:

-start
-run
-msconfig
-services
-MESSENGER (tick box)

I have tried disabling it from here however it still loads when I log in.

Is there some registry key that I need to add/change to stop it from loading (I would prefer to uninstall it of course, but disabling it would also be fine).

Cheers

47367 2002-05-06 03:53:00 Try this to remove it:

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

Just copy and paste the above into the Run window.

Open Windows Messenger. Click on Tools > Options. In the window that opens click on the Preferences tab at the top of the window, and right at the top there should be an option to 'Run this program when Windows starts'. Just clear the tick-box next to that option, and click OK and close Windows Messenger. Now when you restart it shouldn't open by itself.

47369 2002-05-06 04:35:00 I would like to thank both of you for your help!

I am now Windows messenger free!

I noticed cyabro's post mentioned msmsgs, I had a look in:

-start
-run
-msconfig
-startup

and found a reference to msmsgs, unchecked this box and it worked, no more Windows Messenger!!! (At logon at least).

Thanks again for taking the time to help me.

47370 2002-05-06 09:56:00 Do you want to go further and uninstall it for good?

Just goto Start>Run, type c:\windows\inf\sysoc.inf and hit enter (or you can go to the file yourself in My Computer). Find the line:
msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7
and change the hide to nothing, so it now looks like
msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,,7

Now, goto Start>Control Panel>Add or Remove Programs>Add/Remove Windows Components and you should find a new check box for Windows Messenger. Uncheck it, click Next, and you no longer have Windows Messenger.

47371 2002-05-06 10:25:00 Ok tried that.

Two glitches.

Firstly if you are using win xp (Win NT based) then you should use the following command line in run c:\winnt\inf\sysoc.inf

Secondly: I edited the sysoc.inf file as you said so that it wouldn?t be hidden in add/remove windows components. However I ran into a problem here instead of a nice tick box with windows messenger (I checked everywhere) I got a little computer icon with a tick box next to it (unchecked) and no description. Checking or un-checking this box has no effect on windows messenger whatsoever (tried restarting etc etc but still no luck).

Any other suggestions to try?

Cheers Liam
