1299107 2012-09-05 07:30:00 Hello everyone,

I recently just got my first ever lap top (finally getting with the times lol). My relative bought it for me as a college gift and it came directly from dell. It is a Dell Inspiron N5040 windows 7. I set it up and it is having problems connecting to the internet. I have wireless internet and it is working perfect, it says I am connected and that the connection is excellent. When I click diagnose problem it comes back saying windows can't communicate with the device or resource (primary DNS server). I have no clue what this means or how to fix it as I am not computer saavy. Also, it seems so slow to me. I do not have anything on it yet because I have not been able to use it. It has the basics I guess that dell puts on it. I called my internet provider and we checked everything and it is all good on their end. I have called dell and they say call my internet provider. I feel like I am getting nowhere fast. Anyone have any ideas on what I should do? I am back to using my desktop, but really want to start to use the laptop.

Thanks in advance

1299108 2012-09-05 08:41:00 What sort of security package came pre installed ( they will be trials if any of the below) ??

If its Either Norton, McAfee, or Trend Micro, you may find the firewalls they use are not configured to allow your connection through.

1299109 2012-09-06 12:42:00 Yes, they gave me a trial of McAfee and it has since expired. If I take it off the computer should it allow it to connect to the internet? I have no idea what I am doing? angchick (16026)
1299110 2012-09-06 20:59:00 Uninstall Mcafee anyway, its crap. Then use its removal tool (download.mcafee.com) Speedy Gonzales (78)
1299111 2012-09-06 22:02:00 Uninstall all the bloat that's been bundled on it while you are there too.
