| 1274361 | 2012-05-09 07:32:00 | Ours is available, got the street mailout. Spoke to someone else around our area. Our concern was similar to theirs. Unable to have two different phonelines (and numbers) and unable to have multiple handsets around the house. Talking about family households with post teen kids .... It looks like if ADSL is the same price or even a bit more than fiber we would just stick with ADSL ... | Nomad (952) | ||
| 1274362 | 2012-05-09 07:37:00 | Why can't you have 2 SIP trunks or something like that over fiber? Has the provider actually said you cant have 2 lines? | Alex B (15479) | ||
| 1274363 | 2012-05-09 07:45:00 | Ok, that might be an option. I thought we only get one Genius box. Maybe they could install two fiber sockets into the house ..... Two lines was his issue. Our issue which is shared with them is that you cannot have multiple handsets around the house. Other than RJ45 or wireless VOIP phones or maybe a cordless system with 5 handsets .... Our folks like to have a corded phone in the kitchen, lounge and in the bedrooms plus a cordless system. |

| 1274364 | 2012-05-09 08:34:00 | Asked orcon if we could use our own fibre gear (so I didn't have to rent their stuff) but apparently that doesn't work . Have to use their stuff (or so their email said) When I get it ill see if I can get it going . Should solve the handset issue . On a side note, is genius VoIP? There was an app I saw once for win mobile I think (that's right, 6 . 5!) , or android that would use your mobile as a VoIP handset . Was a bit more advanced than that but I don't remember it well . |

I rang Orcon, the lady said we cannot have two lines. Will report back.. With technical support, the guy said only one no. for the being for residential products. He said something like a fiber line plus a copper line that you pay more, something I didn't quite understand. For the phones, he said only one jack on the Genius machine so you need like a cordless phone system with multiple handsets. |

| 1274366 | 2012-05-09 09:45:00 | There's no reason why you couldn't get a second SIP line from another provider - say 2Talk, or whoever. | somebody (208) | ||

It looks like if ADSL is the same price or even a bit more than fiber we would just stick with ADSL ... No reason why you can't have different handsets all around the house. Takes a little bit of wiring adjustment, I'll admit, but I've done it. Your house's jackpoints will all be connected together, and connected at one point to the external copper network. Disconnect the point where it terminates to the copper network (the junction box on the front of your house), and you've got a whole lot of jackpoints that are linked together. Simply plug the VoIP output of the Genius router into one of those jackpoints, and it will be patched through to all the others. Plug a phone in wherever you want. And if you really want a second phone number/line, get one from another provider. Slingshot (iTalk) and Xnet (VFX) both offer VoIP services that work with any ISP, you just need an Analogue Telephone Adaptor (ATA - see here www.xnet.co.nz) which connects via ethernet to your router, and provides an analogue phone output (or even two in some cases). And I don't think Orcon is the only ISP option for fibre either. Xnet offers some fibre services. |

| 1274368 | 2012-05-09 10:46:00 | Orcon will tell you that you can't BYO gear, but you can, at least for ADSL you can. Just signed up for Genius (Genius is the name of their Router + VoIP service) and I'm using my own device. Had no choice but to go for an 18 month contract though, or otherwise they charge $5 a month for the router even if you don't use it. Stupid much? | Chilling_Silence (9) | ||
| 1274369 | 2012-05-09 10:47:00 | Thanks for that, will pass on the info :) We've only got the Orcon pamphlet in the mail. Will other fiber ISPs be available or do they need to do some work first? I think the issue with them is that, he might have an interest in IT, needing to go with iTalk might deter them. They might just want a one product solution. |
