2012-09-04 22:09:00 | Pairing the clients machine with a GT560Ti is a waste of money IMO, that CPU will really bottleneck the card, so the GPU will be lucky to use half its power....I more suitable GPU would be something like the 768MB 460 or SE version....you could save the client over $100 easy! I agree for the most part, I don't think he mentioned the Ti though just the regular 560 which is not such a mismatch. Also they can always keep the card for a future upgrade. I do think a balanced system is a good Idea but I disagree that the CPU will always bottleneck the GPU. Some games require much more GPU horsepower than CPU and can still take advantage of a decent graphics cards even when matched with a slower CPU. A dual core Athlon and a GTX560 will play more games well than the reverse situation of an i5 CPU and low end graphics or onboard would for example. I think maybe a 5770/6770 (both essentially the same card) or a GTX550 would be a better match though, cheaper, less power consumption, and enough for most games up to 1080P medium detail. A friend of mine gamed on a very similar CPU until quite recently(5200+ I think, it's around here somewhere), even Skyrim played ok. It was Rage from ID running at about 2fps that finally forced an upgrade and even then he got a 2nd hand PhenomII x3 and everything is fine again. He uses a HD4850 on a 19" monitor (which again is a better match for that CPU) and plays all the current game squite successfully. If you don't use high res and push all the settings up older hardware can do surprisingly well and still look good.

2012-09-06 04:59:00 | I can relate. :D I use an Athlon 64x2 4000+ and still works great. I can play Skyrim on Medium to High. I got Rage running at 20 FPS on my low spec system. Still playable. I managed to finish the game with no probs. Even the racing was easy, not too much lag. | ChazTheGeek (16619) | |
2012-09-06 06:53:00 | I don't see/get how a 5200+ + 4850 gets 2fps and a 4000+ + 520GT gets 20. I take it that the 5200 is the better CPU. | icow (15313) | |
2012-09-06 09:05:00 | Ii is, from memory the 5200+ is in the 3.0GHz range. Looked into getting one but never bothered as I wanted I quad core. | ChazTheGeek (16619) | |
2012-09-06 10:26:00 | I don't get that either, the game was completely unplayable until he upgraded the CPU. Maybe something was set wrong. 2fps was a guess, but basically you got to the start, the pod opened, and it turned into a slideshow and would take quite some time to respond to any attempt at movement. Seeing as the only upgrade he made was the CPU and the game now plays fine you gotta wonder. His system did used to randomly restart as well but he never really let me have a decent go at fixing it. Also Chaz the CPU is sitting on my desk doing nothing, you can have it if you can collect it from HN or wanna pay the price of a small courier post envelope, PM me if you want. I make no promises as to the actual model and state of it but I'm pretty sure it's functional. I don't have a board for it and I'm not going to spend money getting one. Anyway, sorry to go off on a tangent not meaning to Hijack the thread.
