1299291 2012-09-06 10:53:00 It is crazy how much cheaper it is to buy office from the states, especially if you just get the product key card sent in a standard envelope to save on postage.
It seems strange that NZ can't purchase a download copy direct from Microsoft.

1299292 2012-09-06 10:56:00 The three users thing was more about the size of the business, in case Microsoft had solution specially for that sized business that I was unaware of. I'm trying out the Kingsoft Office right now, I'll Digby if Kingsoft Office doesn't meet my requirements and learn the secrets to acquiring Microsoft software from the US.

Thanks everyone.

1299293 2012-09-06 10:58:00 Digby, what you say about the others not being the same - depends on what you want to do. I know of several people myself included that have some documents or spreadsheets that are a total mess trying to open them in open office and created on MS programs.

Have you tried kingsoft Office ?

Below is a real quick nothing meaning test ;) :p

The screen shot was taken of a document, look and you'll see theres two parts, the original was done on Kingsoft office then other added to on Word 2010.

Question, Which half was done on kingsoft ( top or bottom) ;)

If the cheaper option works good, other wise buying the "real" product may have to be -- no harm in trying them out :D

1299297 2012-09-06 22:13:00 You also want something your staff will be familar with ie MS Office, not OO etc

Assuming you dont need Outlook . . .
You could look at buying Office 2000 or Office Xp on trademe . They are both pretty much worth nothing now, but both still
better than freeware versions (my Opinion) .
Also both can open docx with the patch from MS

I pulled my Office 2K & Office XP out of the trash, thats how much they are worth now .

Ive tried OO, Libre etc etc, still went back to MS .

1299299 2012-09-08 04:46:00 Try Libreoffice, Or Oxygenoffice Pro. Both are also free.

Thanks for offering up more options!

Out of the three free solutions which one would you, the people of PF1 recommend (the most important part of the software is that they play nice with Microsoft Office, if it has any bearing on the choice)?

I'll probably get shot down for promoting OOo but here goes:

Right now LibreOffice is the one with the best support and the best community (important in an Open Source Project), Apache OpenOffice that is the new home for OOo is still getting to it's feet but not long away. The other Office software that is based on the OOo code is IBM's Lotus Symphony, very good and has an award winning UI and excellent fidelity with MS file formats. That's also free and Open Source so you can have as many installations as you like and obviously upgrades to later versions further down the track is free. Symphony however doesn't have Draw (entry level DTP graphics) or a Database. But if word processing and spreadsheets are your main use cases then Symphony is a definite contender.

I've used the OpenOffice family of Office software in my business since 1998 and have never missed not having MSO and people that I deal with have no problems with the documents I produce. Any more questions feel free to ask, if you need staff training PM me.

(edit) oops sorry Symphony can be downloaded from here : www.ibm.com
