1299164 2012-09-05 22:59:00 I have a computer that is indiscriminately freezing.
Windows 7 64bit SP1
4gb ram; Pentium Dual Core E5400 @2.70 Ghz; 500Gb hdd

I have checked the ram: ok
I have checked the hard drive: ok
I have run the system under a stress test for 35 minutes: passed
I have run WhoCrashedIt: but it found none???

physically the computer seems ok
so I can only assume there is a software / os conflict.
Would this be correct? Am I headed in the right direction?

If so, this is where I am stuck.
Because there is no pattern to the freezing, I am unable to discern what software is the culprit.

Can someone give me some direction to resolving this annoying issue.
Thank you in adavance.

1299165 2012-09-05 23:06:00 Could still be a hardware failing. Could be the PSU, or HDD, Or RAM, or motherboard. Just because they pass tests doesn't mean there isn't a fault ( had that happen a few times lately).

I have one here that was built in 2003 - the RAM slots on the board are faulty - test the RAM outside the PC and its fine, yet test it on the original board and anywhere from 5 min to 4 hours later it will falter - PC freezes.

One way to test if its hardware or software - Run it in safe mode, see if it freezes, even if it doesn't it still doesn't mean its not hardware,as default drivers may not cause it.

What you can also do is reinstall windows from fresh, see if it still does it. Thats what all the big name brand manufactures do when theres a warranty involved - They usually say - install the factory default OS, if it still plays up then they look for hardware problems.

Being windows 7 look in the reliability logs - click start, type in reli - View the history, see if it says anything obvious.

Thank you for the advice.

1299167 2012-09-05 23:55:00 The graphics card can sometimes be a culprit as well, if you have the option try another or onboard for a while and see if it helps.
Also not all RAM tests catch everything, I'm not sure on current version but memtest used to have an option for extended tests and I had RAM that passed the 6 standard tests no matter how long you left it but failed on the first of the extended tests every time if you chose to run them.

No have not run a virus scan - the computer has BitDefender Internet Security 2013 - I would have expected that BDIS would have detected any infection - BUT still a worthy step to take to eliminate the posibility.

Thank you for the link - will read up.

1299171 2012-09-06 00:18:00 hey NZ HAWK , you welcome , now i would suggest you run something like malwarebytes -www.malwarebytes.org/ ,see if it detects something or else use Spyware Terminator - http: , see if it detects something . Also run bitdefender if both of those can't detect something . I though think malwarebytes should detected if there is a viruse . Nhashon (16466)

1299173 2012-09-06 00:46:00 How long does it freeze up, clock still ticks over? Had one last week where the mouse pointer was freezing now & then, turned out to be a faulty mouse. Renegade (16270)
