1298575 2012-09-03 06:41:00 Just installed Win 8 release preview on my test machine and have a play with it. It's a pain to use this new OS without the Start button but after installing the "Start8" third party add-on, found it to be quite OK - not much different from Win 7.

1. How to send a short-cut to the Desktop from Wlin 8? It's pretty simple in win 7, just right-click the item and select 'Send to Desktop', but seems to be missing in Win 8.

2. How to create a system image in Win 8? Couldn't find the Back up and Restore function.

1298576 2012-09-03 09:04:00 If you have disabled the Metro, then you have made more work for yourself. By default the Metro is the start menu, its how MS designed it.

if you don't use the Metro, then you have to dig around in the control panel to locate the settings.

This is using Windows 8 RTM, so things may be slightly different in the Preview.

Shortcuts - If you want a program - right click the Metro, Select All Apps ( bottom Right) locate the file you want, right click it, bottom Left, Pin to start. If its a file, folder then simply right click send to desktop.

Imaging - Simple as in the Metro. In Metro / Start, simply type in File Recovery - Under the Settings option ( top Right) the top option in Metro is Windows 7 File Recovery, the window opens, and theres Options to create image.

To do it if you have no Metro, open the control Panel, top right in search type in Windows 7 File, the top option should be the option to create a Image. ( Windows File Recovery)

One thing, Windows 8 and PF1 Dont like one another when uploading a Pic - PF1 uploader cant handle Windows 8, it simply doesn't want to upload, do it on a W7 PC and no problems.

1298577 2012-09-03 10:53:00 In W8 if on Metro, you can get some options by moving the mouse to the bottom Left corner, right click and a sub menu appears ( forgot to mention that before)

Forgot to mention also, the Windows 7 File Recovery is actually in the control Panel if you are using large Icons View, and not Category.

One feature that has improved is the Screenshot - press the windows Key, and PrtScn at the same time, the screen will flash/dim for a second.

Look in the My Pictures folder, theres a new folder called Screen Shots- there's the screen shot. Works within Windows and metro interface.

1298579 2012-09-04 01:05:00 Thanks for all the info.

Randomly, I now encounter the following error when shutting down, not every time, though. Here is the error message:

" DDE Server Windows: explorer.exe - Application Error. The instruction at 0x19177f66 referrenced memory at 0x1a931a38 could not be read.
Check OK to terminate the program. "

1298580 2012-09-04 01:28:00 Googled and followed MS suggested method # to refresh windows; running it now and seems to be very slooooow. It's 10 mins gone and it's only 21% done.

Never expected a preview version having this sort of problems! It's hard to convince me in buying it!

1298581 2012-09-04 01:32:00 Its odd, as I also have the release preview. Have only had an app crash on me once (the NZ herald app), but apart from that have had no problems. Its fast, slick, and windows explorer had never crashed, which is more than can be said for win7. I'm a convert! :) Nick G (16709)
1298582 2012-09-04 01:37:00 I have only Office installed and not even launched IE yet.

Shouldn't have any hardware issues as this machine was running fine with Win7

Never expected a preview version having this sort of problems! It's hard to convince me in buying it! Why surprised ?? Its a Free preview - meaning they are still ironing out known bugs , and the one you got could be one of them, that should have been fixed in the RTM ;)

Windows 8 has several Known bugs in the preview, it may have been built ontop of W7, but theres quite a bit gone on under the hood thats changed.

One was freezing sometimes completely at random, it was due to how some hardware ( namely the CPU) handled windows 8. I had this freezing problem at least once a day.

One fix was simple - disable the process causing it, by opening a elevated command prompt, typing in:

bcdedit /set disabledynamictick yes

Reboot and problem solved.

Now RTM is out and installed, the problems gone, never frozen again and on the same hardware.
