1298156 2012-08-31 09:22:00 Just came back from holiday and found that my camera's memory card "does not have a file system" and "requires formatting" ie, does not show up in Win7pro64

The card is a Lexar 32GB Class4. On our 3rd day it started giving errors such as "recording cancelled due to slow write speed" and "files exceed the maximum". I put it away and used a Lexar 16GB Class 4 and had no more problems. On arrival home, I find I can't copy files from the faulty 32GB card. There are jpegs on it as well as the videos. The videos have raw names like 0001.mts, 0002.mts and on importing by Panasonic's software would normally be changed to something like 20120831(113545).m2ts (ie, the importing software writes the date and time as the filename). There are 3 additional files for each m2ts file, one with GPS information, the other two for Panasonic's presentation software I believe. I don't care about those 3 files

Any advice on how I might proceed?

1298157 2012-08-31 09:32:00 I've been using easeus/data-recovery (www.easeus.com) lately for all sorts of drives. The Free version will recover upto 1GB total. If you have more then you need to buy it, if it works OK and you have more than 1GB, then the question is, how important is the data you want - is it worth the price of the software ?

On a customers drives not so long ago, it recovered approx 300GB of data - where many others wouldn't even see the drive, let alone recover it.

1298158 2012-08-31 13:32:00 you could also try pc inspector file recovery/pc inspector smart recovery, I've had good success with those programs ans as cards. wratterus (105)
1298159 2012-08-31 13:56:00 Filescavenger v4 is out with improved features, you can get a free demo that will show you what it finds but you will need to buy it to recover anything. Agent_24 (57)
1298160 2012-09-01 05:22:00 OK, I tried all 3 of the above suggestions

As Agent_24 says, File Scavenger v4 is great for listing what's there AND previewing the jpegs! But I can't recover anything without forking out US$50. And I don't know how it performs on videos (which it does not preview)

Easeus allowed me to actually RECOVER a few more of the jpegs. The jpgs were in their own folder and were less than 1 GB. I can't recover any of the videos because they are all in the one folder and total 10GB

(I had previously accessed the jpegs with Windows Explorer and got 38 of 44 pictures. I lost access to the card after using Panasonic's software to import the videos. The Panasonic software retrieved 41 videos totalling 7 GB. File Scavenger lists 62 videos totalling 10 GB. Two of the videos are not of interest - one of them 0 bytes)

I had trouble getting PC Inspector to work, but that could be 'me'

So the current situation is I need to recover 4 jpgs and 19 videos totalling 3 GB and spend about NZ$70. I am attracted to File Scavenger because it gives me previews of the 4 remaining jpgs that weren't recovered by Windows Explorer or Easeus. (Not that I want those particular jpgs, it just gives a good feeling that they know how to do things.) On the other hand Easeus actually recovered a couple of the jpgs in addition to the ones Explorer got. If Easeus truncates the videos in the same way it does the faulty jpgs (rather than discarding the whole file) that could be quite good because a truncated video can be quite valuable

Decisions, decisions...

1298161 2012-09-01 05:24:00 With regard to FileScavenger, if the files you want to recover do actually show up and their state is marked as "Good" then they should be fine.

If you're looking for a free solution, try Testdisk\Photorec?

1298162 2012-09-01 11:51:00 Thank you Agent_24, PhotoRec worked really well. It recovered 106 fragments of the 62 video files totalling 10 GB. This is about the same GB as reported by File Scavenger so I am happy that I have got everything. I have checked about half so far and they look good.

PhotoRec didn't allow me to search for .mts so I chose .m2ts and .ts. It gave me 57 as .m2ts and .49 as .ts

However it wasn't any good on jpgs. It was picking up video frames and was going to take 7 hours. (Perhaps because the videos were 50p?) But with Easeus doing jpgs for free if they total under 1 GB, these two progs give a total freeware solution

1298163 2012-09-01 13:06:00 Good to hear that something worked, if you're not sure if you recovered everything, I would keep a 1:1 sector image of the drive for later scanning with other programs if you want to re-use the SD card in the mean time (or even if not, just as a backup) Agent_24 (57)
