| 1274638 | 2012-05-11 04:07:00 | I have a Honda Accord US Wagon 1995. For the past couple of months the fuel gauge has been doing strange things. When I put $40 worth of petrol in it (about 18.8 liters) the fuel gauge drops to empty. After a few hours it reads 1/2 which is approximately correct. It will then be normal until under 1/4 when I put another $40 worth in. It has done this every time for the last 4 fills. I keep a record of the K's so I have a good idea if the gauge is accurate, it seems to be. Average Auckland consumption is 8.8Km per liter. The red light never comes on when the gauge drops to empty. Any ideas as to what is happening? |

Bite the bullet, fill up, then work on the top half of the tank instead, the gauge may be more reliable there and you have less chance of running out. I set my trip counter at each fill and even if the gauge died, I'd know to fill when I hit 650kM. I get 10.5+ km/L average around town and 14+km/L out of town in a 2.3 manual Mazda 6 Wagon. Your consumption is pretty high so I'm guessing you have an automatic. Cheers Billy 8-{) |

To test disconnect the wire at the sender unit, gauge, should go to mt.Then earth out the sender wire gauge should go to full. Check the sender has a good earth. Most cars its a piece of piss to replace the the sender unit a few are *****. |

Can't even access the wires, have to drop the tank. I will leave that until the fuel pump in the tank needs replacing. Does anyone know how long the fuel pump should last? It has done 180,000 Km. Could cut a hole in the floor, but simpler just to watch the K's. |

| 1274643 | 2012-05-12 05:04:00 | Obviously your US Accord has not been tuned for the Southern Hemisphere - the metric southern petrol gets inside an imperial northern tank and doesn't know which way to turn. | R2x1 (4628) | ||
| 1274644 | 2012-05-12 08:11:00 | The sender unit usually works as a variable resistor/potentiometer (like a volume control) with an arm and float attached to the shaft, you've probably worn away a sector of the carbon track from always filling it to the same point :). You need a new one ;). |
