| 47628 | 2002-05-07 11:48:00 | Whenever I use the Windows Defrag option it starts off ok but then gets to 1% then drops back to 0%? I turn off my firewall and virus monitoring software and screen saver but it doesn't seem to help. Something must keep writing to the hard drive? I have a cable modem if that makes a difference? | Guest (0) | ||

| 47631 | 2002-05-07 21:17:00 | First of all turn off that cursed Screen Saver if you have not already. Two ways of looking at this but both will require a reboot on completion. Press Ctl.Alt.Del once and repeat as required to close all the programs running in your system box except for systray and explorer. Now try and do your scandisk or defrag. Or. Reboot into safe mode and run both your scandisk and defrag from there. To get into Safe Mode restart and as the computer starts to boot up, start clicking the F8 key (exact key may vary between systems but F8 is the common one), you will be offered several options, select Start in Safe Mode. Upon finishing the scandisk and defrag restart back into normal windows |
