| 47593 | 2002-05-07 10:06:00 | Ive been with Xtra since pretty well day 1, but my email inbox is receiving 12-20 junk mails per day. So, after thinking about it for sometime, Im moving to Clear. Im thinking of displaying my email to something like meATclear.net.nz in the hope that I can get around the Junk mail problems I presently suffer. Ive tried blocking senders IE6, but they change their address with every email. Ive not tried any specific email blocking software. So, Q1 - Does blocking software work well, recomendation please Q2 - Will the suggested email address stop crawlers obtaining me true address. I mean, it should be relativly easy for any text editor to remove the likes of Nospam, Remove At from crawled email addresses and have you back in the spammers clutches. Q3 - How can I remain clear of these crawlers without changing ISP by going to a new ISP. Q4 - Do ISP's close down unused accounts after a nil activity period? No I dont visit dubious sites, I do add my name to Genealogy newsgroups, NZ Wtd & some a few others, Cycling, Electronics.. Thanks in anticipation....John. |

| 47594 | 2002-05-07 19:53:00 | q1: pass q2: It will stop most, but because people are being unamaginative and using the same add in terms in the same way, ie: xx'AT'xxxxx.xx.xx or xxxx@'NOSPAM'.xxxxx.xx.xx it is only a matter of time b4 someone writes a programme to get around that. (opinion) q3: Just change your email address, you don't need to change your ISp to do that, although leaving xtra might not be a bad move anyway! Q4 eventually I visit dubious sites often, i have a @eudoramail address that i use for that. I have also created and lost many addresses for that select purpose. ANY newsgroup/forum is dubious when it comes to posting an email address, so NEVER post an adress that you are attached to, unless you like spam! My original @ihug address gets about 4 a day, i dont post it in news groups, but i think it is just a matter of time before any addy gets harvested somehow. Also be careful not to give a valued address to those caring freinds who will forward fasinating eamil to: addy1 addy2 addy3 etc people who haven't worked out what the BCC feild is for, or forward emails rather than the relevant content, do wonders to distribute personal email addresses far and wide! |

| 47595 | 2002-05-07 21:29:00 | You can still block spammers even though they might chanmge the address with every email, it is usually the first part of the address that changes, read below. If you are using Outlook Express you can set up rules, one of them is Delete from Server. Highlight the offending message, Click on Message - Create Rule From Message - that will open a box with three windows, the first window is ticked by default Where The Sender Is - go to the second window and tick Delete from Server - now the fun begins, in the third window is the senders address. If the address is yahoo, xtra, mailcity, or any other common web based mail, then just Ok the rule. If the address ends in something such as grouplotto.com or adultmail.com, then you can create a additional rule to further block mail from that site even if they change the first part of the address from freecar to freemoney. Place your mouse over the address, single right click the address, that will bring up a extra window, in the ADD line type in the address from and including the @, so for example type in @grouplotto.com and that will block other messages from that site as well. If you were to apply this to addresses for sites ending in yahoo for example, then you would also block all good senders from yahoo as well. Have fun. |

You can them bounce them back to the spammer fooling them into thinking your e-mail address no longer exists. The stop sending them fairly quick after that. Nice & simple fix and NZ made to boot. Worth a try before going to the hassle of changing ISP or address. Cheers Phil |
