47694 2002-05-08 02:56:00 It's not a good idea to remove Task scheduler in Win 98, even though you think you dont use it. (See posting lower down page)

Via Tune up Application Start in Task Scheduler it runs Winalign.dll a utility to speed up loading of Microsoft aligned programs and executables like Office.

If you look in c:\windows\system\winali.ini with a text editor, you will see a very long list of programs which have been aligned and hence had their loading speeded up.

Cheers all.

47697 2002-05-08 06:47:00 You are quite right Boyd.
(See also the posting down the page on this topic)
Having looked at the question a bit more and reading that winalign faq page, the alignment utility only works if you have Office installed. The list of files in winali.ini are NOT necessarily the files that have been aligned but the files that WOULD be aligned if Office is installed.

My source of information was Livingston & Straub, 'More Windows 98 Secrets', it is as
Boyd said, not quite correct.

So it probably doesnt matter if Task Scheduler is removed if it is not being used. Just run walign.exe every now and then.

Appologies for any misconceptions folks.

47698 2002-05-08 06:53:00 Good info on that URL :-)

I guess if you have MS Office then you don't need Task Scheduler active to have Win Align do its thing, looks like task scheduler checks to see if Office has been installed first and aligns files. Then this align task is deleted from the scheduler.

I suggest you could run Walign.exe your self if you have Office and worried that things are mis-aligned.

I was curious though and looked in the winalign.ini file and counted 178 entries... without Task Scheduler running, but with Office installed.

I have disabled task scheduler on every PC I configure for family/friends, with no noticeable effects. Get rid of FindFast if you have Office though, that does use resources.

With all due respect, I humbly disagree.

Scheduler sits in memory and distracts resources all the damn time. Whereas I load Excel, Outlook, and Word once and leave them open for about a week on average.

It's no contest. Death to all unnecessary apps.
