47985 2002-05-09 12:03:00 Hi

I recently recorded from DVD to VHS. It took more than 4 hours to record yet when i played it, it only took normal viewing time. i.e 2.5hrs.

Can anyone tell me why is this so and also is it something to do with DVD being in NTSC format if DVD do come in NTSC format.

Oh and also does NTSC tape spin faster or something when played than PAL format tape. Or is it just the signal which is in different format. Can someone explain me the diff and also plizz how does a multi system video player play each format. Is it at diff speeds or is it decoding in different way or something.

47986 2002-05-09 12:30:00 How did you manage to record for that long if it is only 2.5hrs long.

How exactly did you make the recording.

47987 2002-05-09 12:35:00 when you say 'dvd to vhs' do you mean you record a dvd onto a video tape or did you 'rip' the dvd onto a pc?

not sure about tape speed but ntsc is a different encoding and slightly different frame rate. pal is far better.

one thing to watch with multi system video players is not all do a proper convertion from ntsc tape to pal tv.

47988 2002-05-09 13:25:00 thankxx JM and tweak.

well we were havin a little debate with my mate who claims to have recorded a DVD movie (from a DVD player) to a VHS tape on a VCR player.

According to him it took him more than 3hrs to record onto the tape (VHS). And when he played back the recorded tape on VCR it finished within 2hrs.

the question then was weather the tape was spinning real fast in VCR to playback within 2hrs the same length of tape reel holding 4 hours of movie.

Didnt sound right to me so i posted it up here.My guess was that it will take exactly the same amount of time to record from DVD to VHS Tape as it would take to playback the tape after recording. And so does a NTSC recorded tape play faster(the reel spins faster) than PAL tape or does the tape spin at a constant rate regardless of either format
