47892 2002-05-09 05:24:00 Hi people, I can't really tell you a lot but I did see it this morning. It looks pretty good, from what I did see.

You sort of pre-register with your id, so that you don't have to keep typing it or your email address in when you post.

Those who are paranoid won't like it, but it is done tastefully and if you put a valid email address in there, then I can get hold of you when you win a prize.

You can choose to be notified about new postings on threads you haven't posted in yourself, which is handy. And you can also store some preferences on how you like things.

The security is by session, not cookie based, so those that don't store cookies aren't disadvantaged.

It has new categories, and different classes of postings (we can make some announcements, that people always see at the top, that can't be replied to. We can also make some FAQs, which will help us get that going).

I am looking forward to it. It should be ready to go some time around the 17th of ^&%#$, with any luck.

Stay tuned.

47893 2002-05-09 05:41:00 Thanks for the update Robo. You don't happen to know what software they are using, or have they written there own.

47894 2002-05-09 05:57:00 I hope it isn't classified, but they are building it around some sort of program that is designed for this sort of thing. Jive, I think it is called. However, there are other bits to it, don't ask me more - I don't know. The guy that I normally talk to was away and I didn't have a lot of time.

47895 2002-05-09 06:46:00 Sounds pretty good Robo.

One thing you didn't mention was the search engine - to me that's the second most important part of a forum. The search on this one absolutely sux, or perhaps I should say the way it displays the results does. It really puts me off using it.

47896 2002-05-09 07:30:00 I never search so I couldn't tell you.

47898 2002-05-09 09:37:00 Yaaay!

Not a moment too soon...

But I ask, why so late? This one seems so... ahh.. BBSish?

47899 2002-05-09 10:05:00 Sounds good robo, can't wait to see it but I hope it keeps the two features that raise Press F1 above all others, (fantastic contributors excepted of course) and those are the ability to scroll the complete list of current posts, and to display all responses when a post is opened. I give up quickly on site that you have to plumb just to see the answers to one posting.

Cheers

47900 2002-05-09 10:17:00 Oh yea, if you're looking for moderators, I'd like to volunteer. :) Guest (0)
47901 2002-05-09 11:10:00 I hope it looks similar - I can't stand those forums with tiny, hard to read fonts on a silly coloured background full of peoples own html creations which slow things down, look silly half the time, and serve no purpose. (I do see the benefit of inserting clickable links and pictures, but it usually gets out of hand like it did with the bloody 'google on active desktop' posts around june/july last year.
