| 47890 | 2002-05-09 05:17:00 | Firstly, I've used Imag for the last 6 months (new to PC, ex Apple Mac!), and gained valuable info from the mag; Brilliant in just 1 word. Some time ago, read an article on how to spped up your Internet connection (Jan?Feb 2002). Up to one month ago, the computer was not checking for drive A or D, but since, when launching PowerDesk (free, not Pro ver), I hear a drive being checked, but cannot figure out if it is A or D, none have anything in them. Any clues pse. Also, of late, when shutting down Windows 98ME? (or SE), a message comes up saying 'illegal operation performed, etc.., but eventually, Windows shut down; otherwise, the 'Windows shutting down' screen locks up and I need to reset the CPU, restart and then shut down again. I have defragmented the drive, I run NAV 2002 regularly, run Ad-Aware, and all the necessary PC maintenace, but I'm stuck. Soory about the length of this, but could use some help. Many thanks, Patrick. | Guest (0) | ||
| 47891 | 2002-05-09 09:52:00 | '..new to PC, ex Apple Mac!..' Congratulations! I hope the transition was a pleasant one! :D Powerdesk does have some funny quirks in it. One is to constantly check the floppy drive to see if there is anything in it. I'm sure this could be fixed, but it would have to come from the makers. Chances are that the noise you hear is the floppy drive (probably A:/) doing a quick access to see what's there. This is normal for a lot of software. As for the windows shutdown problem, Windows 98 SE (second edition) came free with a bug to cause shutdown problems! Welcome to the PC. But don't despair. Do a search on the internet for 'Windows shutdown patch' and eventually you will come across a file to download that will hopefully cure your hiccups (as well as shutting down properly). Alternatively, you might check that fast shutdown is enabled or disabled. Try changing it to see if it helps: click Start>Run in the box type 'msconfig' without the quotes. I the program that runs (called System Configuration Utility or SCU) make sure the 'General' tab is showing then click the 'Advanced..' button. There you can select or deselect fast shutdown. |
