48158 2002-05-10 22:18:00 a friend showed me how to clean out 'unwanted' clutter on my computer, now the floppy disc drive won't go. On startup the message is
floppy disc fail (40). What can i do.

If the floppy fail message occurrs at startup, before windows boots, its unlikely to be associated with file removal - if that's what you mean by cleaning out unwanted clutter.
Have you had the computer cover(s) off? The most likely cause of your problem is a dislodged flat cable that connects the rear of the floppy to the motherboard. With the power disconnected, check that the cable is pressed firmly onto the mating connectors - it should look 'straight' and not jacked up at one end. The connectors can get dislodged simply by moving the flat cables. Check the power (4 wire) connector is also pressed firmly onto the floppy.

48160 2002-05-13 01:05:00 If the above doesn't fix it it might be worth checking your BIOS setup in case it is looking for the wrong type of floppy - ie a 5.25' drive instead of a 3.5' or vice versa, or, say a 720K instead of a 1.44Mb. Guest (0)
