48027 2002-05-10 00:48:00 When I start my computer it goes through the start up process, brings up the background plays the jingles and then stalls. If I push restart it will go through the whole bit again and start up. Sometimes it starts normally so any ideas.
I also have problems with my antivirus program it stalls half way through and brings up a blue screen with vxd problem.

Help cheers

48028 2002-05-10 01:38:00 The best way to try and solve this problem would be to boot into safe mode. Disable all programs from starting then reboot into normal mode.

If all goes well, you can selectively reinstate start-up programs one by one to see which one is causing the problem.

48029 2002-05-10 03:11:00 Ive had a problem similar to yours. It was caused by having the wrong sound drivers installed. So check to make sure you have the right ones. If you don't look for them on the net. I suggest that you first go into safe mode and get rid of the jingle and see if it stalls then. Guest (0)
48030 2002-05-10 03:40:00 Once you get in safe mode. You might need to reinstall you OS(for your VXD) so you wouldn't the blue screen. Guest (0)

I've just read this article and done a cut and paste on it. It may help.

Troubleshoot Startup Problems in Windows 2000 / XP

support.microsoft.com

'This article describes general procedures that you can use to troubleshoot startup problems in Windows 2000 [possibly Windows XP]. A successful Windows startup consists of the following four phases: Initial phase, Boot loader phase, Kernel phase, and Logon phase. If a problem occurs during one of these phases, Windows may not start correctly and you may experience one of the following issues: (1) The computer stops responding (hangs). (2) You receive an error message. Windows 2000 provides a variety of options that you can use to troubleshoot this issue, including safe mode, Recovery Console, and an Emergency Repair disk. When you use the Last Known Good Configuration feature, you start your computer by using the most recent settings that worked. This feature restores registry information and driver settings that were in effect the last time the computer started successfully. Use this feature when you are unable to start Windows after you make a change to the computer (for example, if you install or upgrade a device driver).'

Cheers.
