48328 2002-05-11 15:38:00 Hi all, got an interesting dilemma. I recently reformatted and reinstalled windows ME on a friends puter, All partitioned nicely and running smoothly when done so thought no more of it. When he went to use his sidewinder joystick it came up no go. I suggested he go and update all his drivers and then the real fun began. His system suddenly stopped loading at the ME splash screen on start up and would go no further. Safe mode was fine so talked him through updating his drivers again to no avail and also switching back to the drivers from the ME cd did no good. He reformatted and reinstalled windows and all works. I beleive it was the driver for his nvidia gforce2 mx card that caused the prob as this all happened after he updated from the nvidia site. Any ideas people on how to sort this out?? He'll need new drivers but I'm afraid to get him to use the ones from nvidia now??.....please any suggestions would be helpful Guest (0)
48329 2002-05-11 21:50:00 Dipstick,

Make sure he gets the NVidia drivers for 9x,ME, and not the ones for NT,2000,XP, because these WILL make a difference. I went there the other day and started downloading and then realised it was the wrong one.

48330 2002-05-11 23:24:00 I have a Sidewinder Force Feed-back (the original-not USB)and a Geforce 2MX on ME.
I did have some trouble after a re-format and instal also.
I fixed it by downloading drivers from the card site (in my case, Gainward) rather than the ones direct from Nvidia. I also found the old Joystick drivers that came with it worked better than the new ones.

Hope this is of some help.

48331 2002-05-11 23:52:00 I forgot to mention that Sound cards, particularly Creative, give more problems with Joysticks than do Video cards.

For my new computer I purchased a TecSound AC-3 5.1 from warehouse Stationery -
great sound, if you use good speakers, all the bells and whistles, and only $99.00. I even got the Hibernate function back!

48332 2002-05-12 23:39:00 Thanks Mike and Tom, I've managed to get everything up and running again....now that he actually found the OEM cd containing the drivers et.... lol I HATE that. Anyway all gos again and once he's updated and reinstalled all but his divers I'll get him to do a full backup and then try updating his drivers one by one and see if we can get to the bottom of this problem.
We'll try your suggestions also. Thanks once again
