48336 2002-05-11 12:34:00 You will probably be best off creating a boot floppy, and installing from there. If you don't have one, it is easy enough to make one. Just go to a friend's computer, put a blank floppy in and open up the 'add/remove programs' from the control panel.

Click the 'startup disk' tab and then press 'create disk..' and follow the prompts.

Once you have booted from the floppy, ( be sure to choose the 'start computer with CD-ROM support' option, you'll have to run the setup program from your windows CD. Usually you can do this by typing:

X:setup

where X is you CD drive letter.

48337 2002-05-11 13:01:00 Wrong - Windows 95 startup disks are different from those of 98 - no CD Rom drivers are installed on the startup disk.

To correctly install 95, the hard drive should be partitioned, formated and the system files installed using a Windows 95 startup disk after which the DOS CD rom drivers must be installed.
Restart/boot off the hard drive and install Windows from the CD Rom.

To install using a Windows 98 startup disk may create FAT and startup problems later on because of the incorrect system files installed

48338 2002-05-12 00:23:00 win95 startup disk has no drivers. rather than figuring urself all the command lines etc which can be daunting.

just borrow a win98 startup disk from a friend or so. use it on ur computer boot and switch the cd-rom and run setup. if its a upgrade just have disk 1, win31 handy since i needs to read it to verify it.

if its a full win95 - u may be able to boot from cd. so check ur bios and turn PC on with cd in it.

48339 2002-05-12 00:26:00 one reader has pointed out the win98 disk may do a fat 32 format when u do fdisk.

to avoid this when u type fdisk and it ask for large disk support choose 'no'.

48340 2002-05-12 02:57:00 If you can get a DOS boot disk with MSCDEX, xcopy, and a CD Rom driver on it, and you have a reasonable sized HD, do 'md c:\win95', 'xcopy d:\win95\*.* c:\win95'. (assuming that the CD drive is 'D:'.) Then 'c:', 'cd win95', 'setup'.

It is a Good Idea to have the W95 installation files on the HD:
It installs quicker. It is there for changes. It is there for reinstalling.

Get the Y2000 updates.
