| 48168 | 2002-05-11 00:12:00 | Hi. Over the last week my 4x4x24 CD-RW drive has intermittently not shown up when I start my PC. Mostly if I reboot once or twice it will reappear in Explorer but on one occassion did not appear until about 20 reboots. When rebooting my 28mb hard drive is detected as master, nothing as slave and then when working properly the CD-RW is deteced as second primary and my DVD drive as the second slave. When the CD-RW is missing it is not detected on boot up, (boot screen shows 'none'. Mostly the DVD is also not deteced if the CD-RW is not but lately the DVD has been OK, vene if the CD-RW is not detected. Is this likely to be a problem with the drive itself, (good news - a good excuse for buying a new faster one) or is it mnore likely to be a controller/motherboard problem? To fix this am I best off starting by replacing the drive? Don't know if this has any conneciton but the CD-RW has always been pretty unreliable at detecting disks - very often since the PC was new, (early 2000) spitting the dummy in the middle of a game/program and saying that the CD disk can't be found and may be dirty. This was almost always fixed by pressing enter about 6 times. The disks were not dirty - would happen after cleaned, with every disk I have and on brand new disks. TIA Brett |

Alternatively, it may be a cracked cable. You'll have to open up your computer and physically check the cables and connections. I also suggest that you wiggle the connections to 'disperse' any corrosion that might be present. If that still fails, try another known good cable. |
