| 48624 | 2002-05-13 04:39:00 | I was just wondering if the new F1 forums are going to have mandatory posting guidlines on new user registration. This is important as posters have to understand what sort of information is required for a query to be answered effectively. A good query post should include (if relevant): -Operating system and version -relevant hardware / software details such as version numbers, program name, make, model etc. -programs already running - and as much details as possible. The list could be better defined, but you get the idea. Perhaps Tweak'e and others could help define the guidelines... Just a thought |

They dont know what's inside, or hardly even what OS they have. And why should they? We drive cars and we dont have to know why there are 4 valves per cylinder. We all expect it to start and go, subject to periodic servicing. We dont expect to have to re-install the engine if a spark plug gets dirty or a fan belt breaks:) So no matter what guidelines are recommended there will be pleas for help which just say 'My computer wont go, whats wrong?' Somewhere I have GMs response to Bill Gates' comments about how the car industry should copy the way Microsoft operate, if anyone thinks it's worth posting again. It's still a good idea though, maybe even a proforma panel into which the basic details can be entered. |

Then we swing into action. They ask here because they *don't know*. It is good to get the essential information, but 'mandatory posting guidelines on new user registration' will put people off. They've been expensively told that computer technology is user-friendly and intuitive. If they could give all this information, they could fix it themselves. Most give more than my (only mildly exaggerated) example. That's fine. If there isn't enough information, someone usually requests more information. |

If people are bothered by newbie posts, how about a separate Beginners Forum so that only those with time to spare need read it? Cheers, L |

The reason alot of people come here for help is that they don't know all that sort of imfo. or where to look for it!! And alot of the time feel embarrassed that they don't know those things. Keeping it simple encourages newbies to come here. Definately the basic's e.g win 98,ME,xp but once again some people may not even know that!! Provide as much as possible - and then they can provide more when needed etc...The way you post now does the job i think, but perhaps like Elwin said, could be added to a little - but not to over the top!! | Guest (0) | ||
| 48629 | 2002-05-13 13:06:00 | my $0.02 a lot of sites have a rules page when you sign up or a rules post stuck to the top of the forum. btw on some cars you do have to remove either half the motor or pull the motor out of the car to change the spark plugs. good thing they last longer than MSwindows does :) mmm let me see, to remove cam belt out of my van i have to remove front pully. to remove that you need to take out radiator. to remove that you need to take out the front seats. prefer to work on pc's less oil and blood lost ;-) back on topic- a simple guidelines page/post would be a bad idea. it would have to be kept simple. forom sites take some getting used to for newbies.(remember you where one once) |

| 48630 | 2002-05-13 22:56:00 | Hmm.. yes, I was a newbie, but not for long. The first PC I ever got had its warranty voided about 5 minutes after taking it out of the box... I had a drive to know more and so, made an effort to find as much info about PC's as possible. |

People who are newbies don't always know what there is out there for them and this is a computer site and knowledge is a wonderful thing isn't it? and yes I am a newby from a small town so the knowledge is or has been limited! and I do ask the technical questions! Brightens everyone's day doesn't it?! Eliza |
