48606 2002-05-13 03:59:00 Running pentium 120 with 32mb ram and 1.5gb hard drive.
Want to clean up hard drive and find about half my programs are directly off C: and half off C:\Program files\
Will it speed things up if all applications are through the Program files directory?
I believe off C: should be Program Files, My documents, Windows, -anything else?
Can you refer me to any literature please? Thanks.

48607 2002-05-13 04:26:00 You won't be able to measure any difference in speed if you do move the programmes to be under Program Files.

The only reason for putting them there is to avoid the root directory of C: looking untidy. If you are not booting to DOS, and using the black screen command line environment, it doesn't matter. (It doesn't *really* matter even then --- it's just aesthetics).

Unless you have the installation disks for all your applications, moving them is most likely to cause problems. And you'll spend a lot of time doing it.

If the system is working, just get rid of leftover temporary files and defrag the disk every so often, and otherwise leave it alone.

The best rule is: 'If it's not broken, don't fix it'.

48608 2002-05-13 05:14:00 Graham is the guru to listen to, he knows far more than I do. I just want to say that if you are planning to reformat then you are on the right track for the file arrangement, ie programs in the Program Files folder and not in the C:, etc.

If you are just tidying up in general, follow Graham's advice.

48609 2002-05-13 05:23:00 I'd say follow Grahams advice, because if you attempt to move programmes you'll run into trouble because links, shared files & etcetera will be disrupted.
But Powerquests Magic Mover does do the job very effectively, moves the programmes and restores all the necesary linkages. I have used MM with no problem - even shifting programmes from one partition to another.
