48534 2002-05-12 23:03:00 My daughter keeps getting letters from her friends that have a lot of mail recipiants in the To and CC fields sometimes as much as 20. Sometimes they ask that she send it to her friends as well. She says see knows most of the people on the list but I am wondering if there is anything more sinister about them. Guest (0)
48535 2002-05-12 23:20:00 The only thing I can think of that may be harmful is the more names on the list the easier it is for a virus or trojan to spread so just ensure your anti virus is up to date which is something you should do anyway.
It sounds like your daughters friends have just added her emaill address to their mailing lists, This is easy to do through outlook and just means she gets lots of mail. I wouldn't worry about the letters as I myself receive about 5 a day from various people. Some of my friends have created mailing lists of up to 40 people. If the letters are of a nature that are worrying then just delete them as I do.
One bit of net ettiquette though is to ensure that the people on the mailing lists do not mind receiving these letters, I have told all my friends to please only send me interesting or funny mail and some of the things I receive now are absolute gold.
And any virus warnings etc you receive through email please check first against the hoax/joke database at www.symantec.com as these often aren't viruses but rely on the receiver to do the damage to the computer themselves, ie delete necessary files.

48536 2002-05-14 10:13:00 I put them in the category of spam and delete. As with normal snail mail chains, they generally have some element of 'good luck' if you do 'Bad luck' if you don't. Depending on your philosophy, this can be harmless fun or potentially damaging to young minds.

I delete and have never sent on a chain letter, e or snail.

48539 2002-05-15 05:18:00 I forgot to mention that she gets them through hotmail and they usually come with some sort of girly greeting card or gif file of some sort that are available from various sights on the web. Guest (0)
