I was in a computer shop the other day and this guy had a 'klenz' hit, cost him $270 to have it fixed, not to mention the down time. Oh dear. |

For what ever reason, they know nothing about updating the protection. Add to that those who beleive they don't need virus protection because they only get a few emails from trusted friends or those who say, '...but who would want to send me a virus anyway....' And then you have the AV programs that have never been correctly set up anyway so they never look for updates and the user is either unaware that they are not getting updates or has no idea how or where to check. And then you have the prized twits who just don't care anyway....... |

Not to mention that these people help the virus spread and send your email address to thousands of others, more spam! Cheers Liam |

| 48855 | 2002-05-14 21:37:00 | Just remember this. For every 1 IT savvy user, there are probably another 10 who are just office user with a PC plonked on his/her desk with no other training other than how to type a letter or spreadsheet. The majority of users I encounter have very little or no knowledge of how email works. To them, its just another tool, like the stapler or copier. So yes, despite frequent reminders not to open these documents, they will automatically do that. Fair enough we have enterprise AV software running on their desktops which update their definition file daily. But once their home, they have no idea how the computer works. |

For this reason we are stuck with viri after viri, mainly targeting, windows and OE. |

I checked it out and the last update was dated 1998! when asked why it had never been updated since purchase 'I didn't know I had to. The shop never said anything about that'. So much for Dick Smith!! rgds |

Luckily i am keen to learn about what i use - whereas my partner is happy just to use like so many others - let somebody else worry about how things work is their motto i think!! Another area i recently came across was a friend (new user) to proud to say he didn't know how things worked!! - Had confused the A.V updates with the System windows updates - later when i started thinking on a different level i realised how this could easily happen with a new user - to them an update in the system should cover virus's right! And to them if you have got A.v software you should be protected from virus's!! So i wonder how many others think the win updates do their virus's? Anyway as i said i think that the shops who sell should be more onto teaching - they are fast to take the $$$, and also new users need to be prepared to learn how their computers work!! Will avoid alot of unnescessary probs with virus's for them and us ( well hopefully not us cause we will be onto the updates etc..) |
