48769 2002-05-14 06:13:00 Hi, Im a newbie having problems reinstalling Win98SE.I got the following message at setup 'Scandisk encountered a data error while reading the FAT on drive C, this error prevents scandisk from fixing this drive' then 'setup found errors on Hard drive. You must repair errors before continuing setup' I believe the reinstall is necessary to try & fix startup problems caused by missing file ' windows/system/VMM32/ifsmgr.vxd ' which the registry could no longer find after scandisk ran a surface scan and found 3 bad clusters on the 15GB Seagate Harddrive, which it tried to fix.Since then I have been unable to start pc, not even safe mode. I can gat an A:>prompt using the startup disk. Can I somehow fix this problem or has my hard drive suffered a major problem requiring expert help. I do have some disk tools on a Norton System works rescue disk, but I am not sure how to use them.
I would appreciate any expert advise.
Cheers

48770 2002-05-14 06:30:00 You have a major problem. Scandisk can 'repair' bad areas of disk by copying (what it *can* read) the data to other areas on the disk, then marking the bad spots so that they aren't used again. Unfortunately, to manage the disk, tables like the FATs are stored in fixed places.

First, is your computer still under guarantee. If so, back to the shop.

Second, how important is anything you have saved on the disk? If you need it, and it's not backed up on some other medium, get expert help.
If you're going back to the shop tell them you want your data. They might be able to get it back for you.

The disk is faulty. You can't scandisk it for a reinstall of the Windows. You might salvage the disk by reformatting it. That deletes *everything* on the disk. Format will check the disk for hard errors. If it complains about the bad area, you still have a problem, and a new disk is the answer, but you could try using FDISK to repartition the disk. Tell it to make a partition starting from cylinder 3. That will avoid the bad spot. Then format and install.

48771 2002-05-15 06:20:00 Thanks for your reply Graham. This was the news I was dreading. The machine is S.H. so no warranty.I was hoping this was a software/registry problem as the fault occured straight after I corrected the system date ( A change I was concerned about - refer my 1st posting 'win98 reistry backup' 18.4.02 - 20.49 ).I guess the only option is the reformat with my fingers crossed. If that doesnt work I will probably have to wait till I have enough saved for a new HD ( & norton antivirus as no Cd's came with the PC - I'll put this down to a learning experience). If I installed a new HD could the original be formatted and used as a second HD for files etc.
Again thanks for the advise.
cheers
