48782 2002-05-14 05:16:00 I bought a new PC. Its a new AMD 2000 XP with 768MB RAM, Geforce 4Ti, 21' Monitor, 100GB hard drive. It does not run fast at all. it takes 5 minutes for windows XP professional to load? When i get into windows desktop it freezes and reboots again. Sometimes when i play a game it will stop half way thru game. Do i need more RAM and better graphics card plus new cpu? Guest (0)
48783 2002-05-14 05:44:00 Hi Qwerty

No you don't need to upgrade anything, heaven knows 768MB of RAM should be enough for anybody! Document clearly the problems you are having then take it back to where you bought it and ask/tell them to fix it. If they don't, ask for your money back instead and go buy another somewhere else. You shouldn't have to wait more than five working days for a fix either, any longer and its time for them to give you a repalcement.

This advice presumes that you bought the computer from a shop of some sort and that you have not installed all sorts of programs, shareware, warez etc or filled it up with viruses. If you bought it privately then you might need to pay someone to take a look at it.

First up, it's kinda weird when people like you get paranoid and won't use a real sounding name, but you trust people like us enough to ask us for a hand with your computer ... I dunno ...

Anyway, try removing some of your RAM ... weird but true, but you CAN have too much ...

I have used this fix with some success on W2K and XP machines ... it seems some systems just start to spack out when you go over the 512MB limit, displaying symptoms just like yours ...

BTW, that IS a nicely specced system you have there - hope it all works out ...

48785 2002-05-14 23:38:00 Actually Rosz, I thought that was quite a clever pseudonym, combining as it does the two mainstream keyboard layouts qwerty & dvorak (albeit with a slight misspelling).

IMHO it's not good advice to tell somebody to remove RAM from a new computer as that kind of action is all it takes to get some unscrupulous dealers to opt out of the warranty obligations citing the fine print.

If it was a genuine shop purchase, first stop is back at the shop, regardless of how simple it might be to fix the problem. If he/she has been sold a system that can't handle 768MB of RAM then they are either entitled to a replacement motherboard/cpu or whatever it takes to get all their RAM active and working properly, or a refund for the unusable RAM.

The solution depends on the deal that was done when the computer was spec'd and purchased and the dealer shouldn't be given opportunities to cop out.

The guy was telling me some technical stuff about what was wrong with it but didn't have a clue what he was talking about. Thanks again to everyone from F1 for their help. My apologies again for the delayed response because i got caught up with this blimy pc i forgot about the post. Cheers!! Guest (0)
