Are you referring to updating from installation version to SR1? If so, it does this when you didn't use the correct CD Key when you originally installed it. If you installed Office 2000 using a key that started something like 'GC6...' then this is what happens when you update to SR1 - its to stop software pirates using a code that they can install without having to activate the software.

You need to give Office 2000 the real CD Key, and activate it, before you'll be able to use it.

I'm searching now for the link at Microsoft.com that gives the process for being able to enter in your original CD Key again (to save you from having to uninstall and reinstall the software). I'll post the link if I can find it.

Have a look here:

<support.microsoft.com

I can't get the page to open, but here's the little blurb from the page that links to it:

Why do my Office 2000 applications exit a few seconds after opening?

Office 2000 SR-1a is designed to update licensed, released copies of Office 2000. Those users who have a released and licensed version of Office 2000 will not run into this when installing SR-1a. Customers using unlicensed Office 2000 software or pre-release (e.g., preview) software will not be able to upgrade successfully to SR-1a. Users who are inadvertently running unlicensed copy should uninstall their current installation and reinstall a released copy of Office 2000, and then apply the SR-1a update. Users who are still running into this issue after they have uninstalled and reinstalled should contact product support. Or, they should follow the directions in the article posted at: support.microsoft.com

If you can get the link to open, then follow the instructions there.

The page finally opened. I'll post it in here just in case you can't get in (it may be easier to click on the View link to view the page more clearly):

IMPORTANT : This article contains information about editing the registry. Before you edit the registry, make sure you understand how to restore it if a problem occurs. For information about how to do this, view the 'Restoring the Registry' Help topic in Regedit.exe or the 'Restoring a Registry Key' Help topic in Regedt32.exe.

SYMPTOMS
When you start one of the Microsoft Office programs listed at the beginning of this article after you apply the Microsoft Office SR-1/SR-1a Update, the program quits immediately after it starts.

CAUSE
Office was installed by using a CD key that begins with GC6J3 .

RESOLUTION
NOTE : Follow the steps below only if you originally installed Office 2000 by using a CD. If you installed Office from an administrative installation, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Q267968 OFF2000: Program Quits After You Update from SR-1/SR-1a Administrative Installation

WARNING : Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the 'Changing Keys and Values' Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the 'Add and Delete Information in the Registry' and 'Edit Registry Data' Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If you are running Windows NT or Windows 2000, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:
Locate your valid product CD Key, which is located on the back of the original CD case.

If the product CD Key begins with GC6J3, the Product Key is not valid in Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1/SR-1a. Contact the reseller of your Office product to obtain a valid product CD key, or purchase a valid Microsoft Office 2000 product. After you obtain a valid product CD key, continue with the following steps.

For more information about purchasing Microsoft Office, browse to the following Microsoft Web site:
www.microsoft.com

On the Start menu, click Run .

In the Open box, type regedit , and then click OK .

In Registry Editor, find the following subkey (folder):
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Uninstall
Click the plus sign ( + ) next to this folder. If you see only one subkey in this folder that has a 32-character {GUID} (globally unique identifier), select that subkey and go to step 5.

If you see more than one subkey that has a 32-character {GUID}, select each one until you find the one whose DisplayName value (in the right pane) matches your version of Office.

For example, if you have Office 2000 Premium CD 1 and CD 2 installed, the 32-character {GUID} and the DisplayName value are:
Office 2000 Premium CD 1
{GUID}: {00000409-78E1-11D2-B60F-006097C998E7}
DisplayName: Microsoft Office 2000 Premium
Office 2000 Premium CD 2
{GUID}: {00040409-78E1-11D2-B60F-006097C998E7}
DisplayName: Microsoft Office 2000 Disc 2

For the selected {GUID} subkey, select the ProductID string value in the right pane.

On the Edit menu, click Rename .

Type OldProductID and then press ENTER.

On the Registry menu, click Exit .

Start any Office program.

When the Microsoft Office 2000 User Information dialog box appears, type your valid product CD Key (located on the back of the CD case). Follow the instructions on your screen.
