49098 2002-05-15 23:58:00 I never heard of anyone mention it but... is it possible to use my computer's modem as a telephone answering machine? Guest (0)

Yes it is possible, if your modem is voice capable (practically all are these days).

You need special software for it though - I had some years back called (I think) Bitware, which had fax software and answerphone software.

49100 2002-05-16 01:44:00 u could buy one if u wish.

or goto www.download.com and get a trialware or a freeware.

some s.w such as MS Phone allows u to call the phone number up urself and when u receive ur own greeting press a special key ... then a PIN number and u can retrieve voicemail ... ie. if u rang at work or on a mobile to check important/urgent voice mail left at home.

U can use it to speak to someone if u like ... with a microphone.

49101 2002-05-16 06:03:00 Mike the program is called Bitware and it is still around. I have not tried the latest version but it used to be pretty solid. Guest (0)
49102 2002-05-16 08:34:00 If you have a Winmoden, or one with the Lucent chipset, you may not have voice capabilities.

The first thing you want to do if it is a winmodem, is to install the latest drivers.

After that, just install some software that has voice capabilities. If your modem suppoerts voice, it should work. If your modem doesn't support voice, the software will tell you.

49103 2002-05-18 11:03:00 another software option is SuperVoice published by Pacific Image Communications.

To be an effective answerphone, yr PC needs to be left on, sometimes more hassle then a dedicated unit.

Also, if u enable power-saving features, by the time the PC detects the incomming call, and the hard-drive spools up, and the program answers the call, the caller may have hung up! :-)

49104 2002-05-19 08:06:00 Haha, maybe that's why no one uses a modem as an answering machine...

anyway, Thanks people! :)
