49086 2002-05-15 23:48:00 Correct me if I am wrong, but I do not recall an article that compares the options for web hosting. Presently I have two sites of the free variety, with pop up advertising. But now I would like to have a more professional site, without the adverts. I plan to design it myself and only need a host (for an educational web site as well as a new small business venture). Must admit that I do not understand some of the terminology and pricing plans available, or how easy/difficult it will be to FTP my web pages to the host. Is there an independent review somewhere that compares web host companies? Maybe in Consumer magazine? Thanks. Guest (0)

49088 2002-05-16 00:09:00 hey Robbie!!

Why not PC World put a article like this on its mag!

Would be v v helpful. Bout the only thing I understand is dreamweaver, frontpage, buy sites off auction sites, can buy domains.

What bout a more comprehensive ... the above things i really know nothing at all. Who manages?? How to maintain, how to upload?? How to switch and buy domains?? How to switch web hosters?? Is shockwave or flash needed. What is dreamweaver?? What about hits - heard people make money from these?? How to invest like a auction page, register w/o free email accounts. How to invest free SMS programs ... build community portals?? Virus/hacker protections?? How to get current affairs and provide on webpage??

49089 2002-05-16 00:16:00 Hey guys, thanks for the support! There really DOES appear a need for a comprehensive article about getting a site up and running, although there may have been something in the last year or so (in PCWorld). What would be of most help to me is a price comparison. Egad, some hosts want $50 - $100 per month! Guest (0)

49091 2002-05-16 01:48:00 If you want a no cost, advert free webspace, you can get 10MB from www.orcon.net.nz. URL is 'yourname.orcon.net.nz'.

There are no 'extras' (php, SSI, cgi-bin etc), and they won't host your name for free. (You could register a name and leave it with a 'free parking' company and point it at a free website though). Be very careful, if you are looking for 'discount' name registration (.nz), that you get to own the name. There is at least one (discount) company that will register you a name, but they become the 'name holder' and so can dictate how the name is used (you can't transfer it to another webhost etc.)

49092 2002-05-16 05:44:00 Nothing beats Kiwiclub on Auckland's North Shore.

http://www.kiwiclub.com

No charges
25MB webspace
No pop up, just a small banner on the page acknowledging Kiwiclub as the host (and out of courtesy putting one of the sponsor banner if you want, which btw they don't enforce if you didn't). If designed properly it will not look out of place.

For bannerless, I think its around $80 or $90 incl (yes incl) gst per year (yes I repeat per year). You try and find someone else who can match that kind of kiwi generosity.

49093 2002-05-16 05:51:00 Most ISPs let you have a 'Home Page' for free as part of your plan, usually restricted to around 5MB of space, which is ample for an uncomplicated site.

It costs a bit more to have your own domain name, both for the web hosting and for the name itself. You can, however, use a free redirection service if you don't wish to have a domain name but want to have a more appropriate address than what you get with an ISP.

Generally, the more the web host provides, the more they charge. I've just loaded a website that I made for work which is hosted by Xtra. They charge $25 per month for up to 20MB space plus I think my employer has to pay $7 or so per month for the domain name hosting, or maybe that's included in the plan? I think the plan includes web usage as well, but I'm not sure.

I tried to get the boss to sign up with Paradise and pay just $10 extra on top of the monthly plan for a home page with domain name but he wasn't interested.

Anyway, it is very easy to upload files to Xtra - just zip them up, go online to their account maintenance page, upload the zip file, instruct it to unzip where you want it and it's done.

I do think their counter tracker is crap though, compared to what statistics you can get with a free counter off the web.

That's all I can tell you I'm afraid, but it may be useful to you for comparing to others.
