| 49042 | 2002-05-15 22:58:00 | Hi all, just a bit of advise needed before I emabark on another big adventure. Currently I have W98SE and Linux Mandrake 8.0 dual booting off one hard drive. Using LILO (as put on by Mandrake during installation) I now have Redhat7.3 My intention is to FDisk out the Mandrake partitions entirely and install RH7.3 in that space. The question is: Do I need to take special action with LILO or will the RH7.3 installation replace it by itself. Also, do you recommend using LILO or should I go with GRUB TIA Shroeder |

(New Installation of course). Your last act in Mandrake *should* be to 'lilo -u' ... to restore the MBR to the way it was before you installed Mandrake. (Check the actuall options [ 'man lilo' ]--- I have never used it because I don't uninstall Linux). Again probably doesn't matter because the RH will install lilo again ... but the MBR which it saves will contain the Mandrake option ... and that could be embarrassing if you decided to do the unthinkable and remove RH and go back to Windows only. I would stick to lilo for a while ... grub is still fairly new, and there have been some problems. They will be fixed, but I don't think there is any reason to use grub yet. |

If you use Grub you don't have that uninstall option which is not so bad if you are dual booting but if you are triple booting like I am its a pain in the butt. When doing the install you can tell it what partitions to use if you use the Custom install option so you don't really need to delete the Mandrake partitions. |
