1299571 2012-09-07 08:36:00 Last week was working on setting up an old HP Media Centre PC.
Originally it was running Vista Home Basic but I wanted to change it to XP as it came to me with an XP Pro COA attached instead of Vista.
The setup went well and all XP drivers were successfully installed (According to device manager)
Unfortunately LAN is showing "A network cable is unplugged" even though there is a definately good and working ethernet cable plugged in cooectly. (I have tried other PC's and cables to be sure)
Tried using a USB Wireless adapter and was able to get onto the internet and then used Driver Revivor to update all the installed drivers successfully.
Still getting "A network cable is unplugged" when I removed the wireless connection.
Tried changing to a static ip address and bingo! I was on!
Just carried on then setting up the PC for normal use and had no internet or LAN issues all day.

Started up machine the following day an "A network cable is unplugged" is back again!

I have worn myself out googling this problem, tried all the "half duplex and full duplex settings)

Any suggestions would be appreciated guys:)

1299572 2012-09-07 08:46:00 Could be driver problems, or could be hardware.

One way to check is boot the PC from a bootable CD, something like Ubuntu. As long as its not some odd ball network adaptor, Ubuntu should automatically pickup and run the Ethernet connection. if its not detecting then its possible theres a hardware failure.

1299573 2012-09-07 09:18:00 Does it have onboard LAN on the motherboard And a separate LAN card because that can cause one of the ports to say that gary67 (56)
1299574 2012-09-07 09:49:00 No just onboard LAN.
Will be trying a boot disc tomorrow:)

1299576 2012-09-07 22:05:00 Changed the LAN cable?? paulw (1826)
1299577 2012-09-07 22:33:00 No question marks in device manager.
Tried 4 Definately working cables.
Turned PC on this morning and after a minute or so LAN changed from unplugged to connected?
Have had it going for the last hour or so and it loses connection randomly for a second or two still?
Have 2 other pc's in house going as well with no connection loss on them.
I havent tried a boot disc (as wainui suggested) because not sure if that would clarify anything for me.
So at this stage I'm not sure where to go from here?

1299578 2012-09-07 22:36:00 Sounds like a stuffed NIC or something. Or its not making contact properly Speedy Gonzales (78)
1299579 2012-09-07 23:11:00 Thinking you may be correct Speedy.
Are seperate NIC cards available and do they work?

Certainly are, certainly do. Check whether PC has an empty PCI or PCI-e x1 slot available.
If neither then you could use a USB to ethernet adapter.
