2012-05-18 07:11:00 | I did some testing today . Do some N cards perform better? So . . I had with me a laptop that is a G and a Netbook that is a N . I copied a file off my PC upstairs (fitted with a G card) . Laptop G Wifi - reported 498KB/sec (Windows) . Netbook N Wifi reported 550 . *Both were on the dining table . Then for distance: Laptop G I could go out the front 2 houses down to the bus stop . Netbook N I could do 10m further . Watching some youtube videos, they say N is way better . . . . . The router is the Telstraclear freebie Netcomm N300 .

2012-05-18 09:23:00 | Mmm those speeds sound really, really slow. That said, it may well be 104km from your "upstairs" to your "dining table". I have a Linksys WAG320N, and my Transformer usually gets around 60-70mbps (about 8MB/sec) real throughput, most of my usage is within ~25meters of the router. | inphinity (7274) | |
2012-05-18 09:46:00 | Laptop G Wifi - reported 498KB/sec (Windows) . Netbook N Wifi reported 550 . *Both were on the dining table . my understanding is that wifi will provide the same speed to all devices . . . meaning that since you have a wifi G card . . the N wifi will operate at the wifi G speed . Try turning the laptop off and restart the netbook and see what speeds you get .

2012-05-18 09:54:00 | Yeah newer firmware defaults to 40, change it and see if that helps. Also, the speed can depend on the client device a lot too...

2012-05-18 10:11:00 | Ive read on some sites people have changed it to 20. To stop the wireless from cutting them off all the time | Speedy Gonzales (78) | |
2012-05-18 10:38:00 | www.netcommwireless.com support.netcommwireless.com The default firmware was "updated" specifically to go to 40, so it can't hurt to give it a try, see the firmware changelog / release notes (Page 3 of the PDF).

2012-05-18 11:48:00 | Re: the Netbook G wifi - under the taskbar the connection is only 54Mbps. Windows 7 Starter. Is that normal. May have a look at the other points tomorrow :) If I am just downloading off the net, it's clocked up to 1,700KB/sec with a download manager. If I turn off the laptop G, sure thing but the PC upstairs is G as well. We only have one N - the Netbook.
