Then you should have tried our Toheroa (a shellfish) soup and fritters!! Green, but with a taste straight from heaven. Unfortunately it is now illegal to take them due to declining numbers, but I know that some people on west coast beaches still have access to them, illegal or not.

1275544 2012-05-16 03:05:00 My loss then . I have taken and eaten more than my share of abalones though . Pinks, blacks and whites are all delicious and as tender as can bee if they are just caught and eaten in less than 15 minutes .

That's what I used to do in around 1964-66 or so .

I'd go snorkeling in Corona del Mar and take a few abs and haul them to the beach, light off the BBQ and bread them in cracker crumbs and beer batter . That was in the days when abs weren't protected and you could take anything from the California Coast for 'subsistence' reasons, which meant you had to actually eat them .

The law says that you can subsistence fish on any pier, but diving for food is illegal in the case of abalone now .

License or not - you can't take abs anywhere on the California Coast without a special commercial license and huge fees .

1275545 2012-05-16 03:21:00 Venison - there's another meat I won't eat.
Too too nasty!
Bitter even.
Dry and stringy.
Not fit for dogs

........ in fact the dogs we had when we lived in New Jersey refused to eat any of the venison that my dad got one year. You couldn't even make chili with it - it reeked.

Sounds like someone needs some cooking instruction ... there's no way a good venison backstraps are bitter, dry or stringy ... you usually only get the from overcooking it or when it hasn't been aged ... bears are olny good for one thin ... sh!tt!ng in the woods ...

And the of course, we do have the US of A Urban Hunters Club (www.stuff.co.nz) .... often referred to as Dumb and Dumber ...
