2012-09-11 05:47:00 | Using http://www.speedtest.net/ from wellington to Auckland download ~25.0 Mbps upload ~9.5 Mbps Thanks for the Answer - Dont mean any disrespect - But thats still slow for UFB compared to what Telstra are putting out. Just upgraded to their faster speed a short while back - My speed test from the link www.speedtest.net Down 64.82Mbps up 9.80 Mbps Do the same test on Telstras Speed Test: http://wellington.speedtest.telstraclear.co.nz/ See what you get, I get on average 85.00 Mbps down in non peak times

2012-09-11 06:31:00 | What options are there for the "router" ? What is the device that the ISP gives you? | Agent_24 (57) | |
2012-09-11 08:18:00 | wainuitech, I got 20/10 Mbps during an evening peak. However I'm using Orcon's "fast" plan, instead of "super fast" Orcon has two Fibre plans: "fast" and "super fast". Both appear throttled, but instead of 30/10 Mbps it's 100/50 MB Frankly given the speed of overseas link, I don't think it's worth the extra $35/month for the "super fast" plan

2012-09-11 08:31:00 | What options are there for the "router" ? What is the device that the ISP gives you ? It's two boxes, both inside the house. Sorry I don't know the exact terminology. One is the termination point for the fibre, a white box. It has a cat6 cable to Orcon's Genius Lite "modem", a black box literally. It seems Orcon uses the same Genius Lite "modem" with both ADSL and Fibre. It's a pretty standard firewall / wireless access point / "plain old phone" port / 4 port hub. No apparant markings, so I'm not sure who really makes it.

Agree that some links are slower, then again some are lightning fast. Got a Download From MS today ( Silverlight) 12.4 MB, hit download button, blinked and it was done - it was really that fast. Downloading other Programs From MS @ 3GB + in size, while not hitting the full speed, they certainly come through a lot faster than the other plan I was on. Now Averaging 3-6 MBps Enjoy the faster speed :) |

2012-09-11 21:47:00 | I think Orcon "super fast" plan would only be of interest to one of the following * an on-line gamer, playing with other LOCAL on-line gamers * a "run-at-home" hosting business, like a on-line store intended for use by Kiwis. What I do like about the fibre is I'm no longer getting dropped during rainstorms. I know this was probably due to some flakey copper wiring somewhere. However it's nice to know the fibre is well protected in a pipe the entire length.

2012-09-12 05:54:00 | Yes, it is funny how quickly you start thinking of how old fashioned ADSL is!! No water probs, as you say. Still a bit concerned about losing the phone if/when the net or power goes down. I can connect the modem to my UPS as it is near my computer but will need another small one for the ONT which is about 5 metres away through a wall. (I still have an old telephone that doesn't need power). But, let's face it, a good ADSL2+ connection still works pretty well for a big proportion of users. Price comparisons are getting interesting, though. $75/mth for the speed, and 30GB of data, is VERY competitive. My Total Home mobile was $99.

2012-09-12 20:32:00 | I wonder if you can use your own router instead of the Orcon Genius box I was thinking about it. Of course, Orcon technical support is the best place for such question. Orcon's Genius Lite modem is configured by web pages. For instance, I turned off the wireless and QOS portions. You can also turn off the firewall, DHCP server, and VoIP phone jack. So at worst you have an additional box before your router / firewall. It may even work without the Genius modem entirely, if you don't want the low-cost phone line. Though I'd probably make the router's outgoing interface MAC adddress match the detached Genius modem, just in case.
