1275998 2012-05-18 02:52:00 Thanks for the video, Trev. Marvellous.

Perhaps one of the conclusions that can be drawn from that video is that the Americans have plenty of money to waste on such toys. At a few million for each aircraft and untold millions for the carrier (and, of course, they have more than one) it just goes to show how the Americans love flaunting their wealth.

Put some of those millions to work in helping some third world countries. Just think of all the good they could do. Instead of making killing machines they could make a big difference to the poorer countries around the world.

Really ??? that old chestnut

getting back on topic :D
This plane is the new Harrier (or its replacement) . Is this the plane the Aussies are going to buy as well ??
Alot of $$ for a country that cant afford it anymore though . Obselete in how many years do you think. Or just too expensive to dare even use in combat.

"The United States is projected to spend an estimated US$323 billion for development and procurement on the F-35 program, making it the most expensive defense program ever.[15] The total lifecycle cost for the entire American fleet is estimated to be US$1.51 trillion over its 50-year life, or $618 million per plane "

Very nice though.

Too right, all Pearse lacked was time, technology and sufficient power, he had the actual STOL concept bang on. Incidentally, VL is vertical landing, not vertical launch, STO being Short Takeoff. If I recall correctly, the Harrier Jump-Jet could both take-off and land vertically, so it could operate out of confined areas. It didn't need a bloody great aircraft carrier, or any form of runway.

Never mind, Pearse was first to fly (ahead of the Wright Brothers) Kiwis split the atom (Rutherford) took Americans to the moon (Pickering) won the Battle of Britain (Sir Keith Park), showed the world the way in plastic surgery (Sir Harold Gillies), invented the Jet Boat (William Hamilton) and there's more if you care to look.........

Cheers

1276005 2012-05-18 07:56:00 Just looks like there's a hell of a lot of "bits" that could fail .... imagine flying along at Mach 1 and that bloody great cowl pops up behind the pilots plexiglass ... OUTSTANDING braking ... SP8's (9836)

Who needs a full-size aircraft carrier now?

:)

No, a lot of the footage cut out whilst the plane was still descending, nice footage overall
