I carry them on all the time.
They come out of my pocket, go through the scanner with all my other pocket stuff and carry on, get scanned and looked at, go back in my pocket and get on the plane with me.
Only one time it has been an issue and it was taken, and that was boarding a flight in Shanghai a couple of years ago. (You don't argue with Chinese border staff... :) )

Really only a problem when in non cary on baggage which will not be pressurised.
