| 1299793 | 2012-09-09 06:27:00 | Here's one for the tech guys Yesterday my power supply made a horrible noise. I thought maybe the thing was chocca with dust etc & the fan had seized. I removed it, had a sniff,it didn't smell burnt, cleaned it out, refitted it & nothing. The computer wouldn't start at all. Installed an old power supply I had, still nothing. After some fault finding i found that the power supply had fried 5 hard drives. Installed a new hard drive today & now windows wont get past the starting screen. It tests the memory & recognizes the hard drive in bios. I've tried using different sata connections at the motherboard end, cleared bios, tried one stick of ram at a time, tried installing to another new hard drive, all with no luck. Tried installing an old version of Ubuntu, no go, tried Kubuntu & it installed no problem. Got on the internet etc. Looked at the hardware & it reported it all their & working. I would have thought that the hardware was OK if it installed. Tried with windows again.Nothing. Any ideas? |

| 1299795 | 2012-09-09 07:22:00 | Thanks for the reply. I stripped the whole thing down, including cpu. Gave it a clean up, re-assembled it & left out the pci cards. Problem solved. One or all of them are faulty. Wndows installed & is now doing the updates It was getting stuck at the very first windows is starting screen after the computer boots from the cd, so it wouldn't give any errors. It was a OCZ power supply, a supposedly good brand. After Googling today, it appears they're not. If anyone's got one, take my advice & bin it Cheers |
