49559 2002-05-19 07:27:00 I recently build a pc for my 81 y/o father who is now surfing like a champion. When I tested it at home the modem reported it was connected at 56k, but the same config at his place reports 33k. I know that the reported connection speed in both cases has no relationship to the real connection speed, but I don't understand why the modem apparently defaults to a lower speed at his place. Cd somebody explain pls? Guest (0)

49561 2002-05-19 10:27:00 Hi Ross

Depends what speed the modem is reporting. The actual connection to the outside world or the speed the modem is communicating with the rest of the computer. And what it reports depends on your modem setup.

If you contact your fathers ISP's help desk they will probably have some initialization strings you can enter into your modems advanced connection settings (extra settings) to 1) make it show the actual connection speed and 2) configure it best for his line conditions, OS, etc.
