49465 2002-05-19 10:27:00 Merlin, I see that Murray has just posted when I started typing this and his advice is what I was going to suggest, so try that. If you can't boot from the floppy it may be because your PC is set to boot from a CD. Post back here and we will give you further instructions if you need them.

DOS has completely gone from Win XP but as far as I know it is still partly there in WinME, just well hidden. I'm using Win98 but I was still surprised to read that you need a boot disk to get into DOS.

Yes, the Find Fast is the same as Fast Find - I think maybe the Riddler got the name transposed a bit.

To get rid of all those files the Riddler referred to, you could also try Spider (see my reply to Murray for the link) as it has been reported to run in Win ME as well.

49466 2002-05-21 02:42:00 i suggest the concern get two computers. one slow PC for internet with no info on HDD and another for their normal work.

Link it up with a 100BT network card. 2nd computer prevents all internet activity .. this should be able to fix it. Well I would prefer to diconnect the cable. So screw the computerfiler ... aka PC Data peterfiler

I could do that wif my P200 win95, office 2k. Brilliant little machine put to great use! And use email encrypyed on slow machine. then export to fast Pc so the usual pc is at no risk. it prevents internet games though..

49467 2002-05-22 02:44:00 Susan - thanks for opening this can of worms and a lot of eyes!

For those wanting to read more info about hidden files I suggest going to the CacheSentry site - EnigmaticSoftware (mindspring.com/~dpoch/enigmatic). There is quite a bit of interesting stuff there, especially about the Temp Internet Files, although from memory you have to poke around a bit to find it all.
CacheSentry may have been designed to take care of many of the issues raised by Riddler. Tweak'e may have some answers to that because he was looking at that prog.

Since reading your thread and Riddler's page I have had a quick play with good ol' Norton Commander, using both the DOS-based and Win 95 versions. Without making any of the changes suggested by Riddler to force the display of MS-hidden files, I looked at the contents of Tempor~1\content.ie5 in Win Explorer and the 2 Nortons (both run from within Windows). All 3 showed 8 subfolders with alphanumeric names. On examining the contents of the 1st subfolder, NC3 (DOS) showed 548 files, NC95 showed 549 and WE showed just 16 .gifs and a line saying '&java=true'. On checking the other 7 subfolders with WE, only 17 lines were reported from each and about 4 of them showed identical or very similar contents. There was extensive duplication throughout the 8, and this is in line with a point made in the CacheSentry info. I did a boot straight to DOS and ran NC3 - it again reported 548 files.

Unfortunately I don't have a spare 3 days to try all the things that come to mind after these readings and a bit of thinking. I have not as yet tried the Nortons to see if they will delete the unwanted files - I suspect they will. If anyone still has PC Tools or Xtree Gold it might be worth experimenting with those too.

Susan, I suspect this topic will be active for a while yet. I suggest you make a new Mk II posting in a day or so, with a link to this one, to keep the thread on the 'front page' which is so much easier to access than the by date, author or subject listings.

49469 2002-05-22 09:51:00 Thanks for sharing that info Robin, the plot seems to thicken every day! It's good (?) to know that the Riddler's claims are being confirmed by other people and that it isn't just a fairytale.

Am currently looking at the Cache Sentry page, it looks a good little program but if all it does is keep one's temporary internet files to a manageable level then I may not have much use for it. I delete them all with Spider every few days. Will give it a run though to see what it's all about.

I'm interested in seeing the info regarding temp files but there's a lot to read and I haven't got there yet. So much to do and so little time! LOL
