49667 2002-05-20 01:32:00 My modem only tries ten times to log on to Clearnet. After ten the modem locks up and I have to reboot the computer to try again. I have the settings set to dial 50 times. Sometimes it takes 30 tries to connect(busy time 7-10pm) so that's 3 reboots. Its a Conexent modem. Any ideas on how to fix it(no, I don't want to throw it away)
Thanks
Allen

49668 2002-05-20 04:55:00 Maybe the telephone exchange (or conexant) have implemented the legal limit on number of attempts to dial one number in a given time. It's sometimes called 'attack dialling', and considered to be nasty.

Does the modem lock up, or do you not get dial tone? It's the sort of thing which would reset in less than the time it takes you to utter a few words and reboot the computer.

49669 2002-05-20 06:37:00 Hi,to be honest Allen,if it takes you that many times to actually get through, then I would throw away Clearnet.Xtra may not have the best name anymore, but I can honestly say I cannot remember the last time it didn't go through on the first try.I suggest you try another ISP.

49670 2002-05-20 06:47:00 Hi,

I'm with peter, if you have to try that much, Clearnet don't deserve your money.

I'm with paradise, and they are just fine, except that they often go down due to IPNet, which is actually telecom's fault, but it seems to hit Paradise a lot, mybe you should go with Xtra.

49671 2002-05-20 07:13:00 Yes I know its not very good service but its cheap at $14.00/150hrs a month. I tried E3, they connected much better but surffing was slow and downloads slower. I would like to get the modem fixed though.

49672 2002-05-20 07:33:00 I use paradise and always connect first try! $20 per month for 250 hours. A lot less stress for the extra $6 Guest (0)
49673 2002-05-20 09:00:00 I use Clear & usually get connected first time. Perhaps you could contact their helpdesk for advice. Also try Conexent site & do google search. Guest (0)
49674 2002-05-20 11:01:00 Unless it is an actual line busy problem it is more likely to be the modem settings.
Double-click on My Computer, then double-click on Dial-Up Networking.
Right-click on the connection icon and choose Properties.
Click the Configure button
Change maximum speed to 38400.
Click the Connection tab.
Click the Advanced button.

In 'Extra settings,' enter the string. +MS=V34
Click OK to save changes.

49675 2002-05-20 12:54:00 Hi Jim B,

Was wondering what the string that you mentioned does. I might use it if it has a practical purpose for me.

Cheers.

49676 2002-05-20 12:58:00 Hi Allen,

You dont mention your OS. There were a few of us that had problems with the conexant driver when we upgraded to XP, and had to use the Fujitsu LB RWmodem V90 56k E driver to make it work properly.

Might be worth a try before you change ISP or throw out the conexant.

Cheers.
