Slow it down as below.

For Win 95 98 ME
Double-click on My Computer, then double-click on Dial-Up Networking.
Right-click on the connection icon and choose Properties.
Click the Configure button.
Change maximum speed to 38.400
Click the Connection tab.
Click the Advanced button.

In 'Extra settings,' enter the string. +MS=V34
Click OK to save changes.

For Win XP
Start/ control panels/ phone and modem options
Click on Modem tab and then Properties
Click on Modem tab and change Max port speed to 38400
Click on Advanced
In the Extra initialization commands box enter +MS=V34
Click OK and OK again

49678 2002-05-21 01:06:00 Thanks for those replies. I'm running Win98se. I'll try the slower connection settings but I think if that was the case it would not stop always after 10. My guess it has something to do with the modem and some sort of counter in it. I shall look up the Conexent site.I have a second computer at home with a Lucent Winmodem in it and on the same line and ISP keeps dialing away until it gets though.

49680 2002-05-21 05:00:00 You are not allowed to attack dial.

I have just looked at the PTC200, the conditions under which you are allowed to connect your modem to the telephone system.

Section 8.1.3 says:

' (1) Automatic re-attempts to the same number shall be limited as follows:-

(a) not more than 10 attempts to the same number within any 30 minute period, and

(b) the equipment shall go on-hook for a period of not less than 30 seconds bewteen the end of one attempt aaand the beginning of the next attempt.'

That information is required to be included in the user manual, as part of the Type approval.

I bet you are redialling, with no delay between attempts. If the ISP has not available connections, all you are doing is loading up your telephone exchange. I noticed a comment soemhwere that in November 1999, an ISP went down. The equipment installed for the 0876 (?) prefix for data calls allowed the calls to be dumped, because one exchange went from its normal 200 connects/hour to 3000 attempts/hr as the ISP's customers went into attack dialling mode. They weren't getting anywhere, but they could have shut down the exchange totally -- for those wanting to make voice calls too.

You would probably be better to put some delay between attempts ... I don't think they enforce the 30 second delay, but they could. But computer controlled exchanges log everything. You *could* be chucked* off the phone system. You are breaking the conditions of service.

If the ISP is 'busy', you won't get through. Attack dialling makes it worse for everyone.

49681 2002-05-21 09:40:00 Well maybe they should give better service. Paradise says no busy message in there blurb. If they can do it why can't Clear. If I could connect after 10 tries I wouldn't have this problem and they wouldn't either.
Allen.
