50024 2002-05-21 21:36:00 Just got a new upgrade box and put my existing internal pci modem into it and it seems to be causing problems.

The motherboard (asus a7v266)had onboard cmedia audio and the modem has the same irq as that.

Everything was working fine at first then I experienced a big crash and windows couldn't load the audio.

Question is how do I get the modem to pick a different irq?

There is an option in the bios to manually pick an irq for a pci slot which I tried but funny thing is when I went into system properties the onboard audio had switched to that irq as well!

Will switching the modem to a different pci slot solve the problem?

Currently it is on slot 4.

Appreciate any help.

50025 2002-05-21 22:25:00 I am on a networked computer at the moment so I can't confirm this, but I think it is something like this.

Right click my computer and go to properties.
Go to Device manager.
While you are here see if there are any conficts. This is showen with an ! next to the Item. if there isn't one there isn't an IRQ problem. if there is there should be one next to you modem.

double click it.
then click on the resource tag.

Make sure it is set to manualy set resources. There should be a button or something that says IRQ or something. Click this and then scroll through the avaliable IRQ's until you get one that doesn't conflict with something.

I hope this helps.
Sorry I couldn't be more precise

50027 2002-05-21 23:16:00 Well it doesnt show any conflicts but that was the same as last time then the problems occured and the audio wouldnt load and the conflict appeared.

I cant seem to change the irq setting in system properties as when I go to change setting in resources it tells me it cannot be modified.

Someone mention removing ACPI might help but im not sure how to remove this.

50028 2002-05-22 09:48:00 Hi Mark

I have't had any experience with PCI modems (specifically got a board with an ISA slot so I could avoid them), but here goes.

Does it have jumpers on the modems PCB? If so you may be able to set the com port and IRQ using these (ie: not plug & play). The settings are usually printed on the PCB somewhere. Check your modem manual or manufacturers site for instruction on this and while your at it download fresh drivers.

A usefull site for modem chip identification and help is:
www.modem-help.co.uk

Modems are finicky little beasties. Sometimes just pulling it and reinstalling will get it up and running or remove it in control panel> modem properties reboot and reinstall. Choose to select your modem (not windows) and follow the prompts, point it to your new drivers (should also install a WAV.inf for voice (which is where your prob may lay). You may have to do this more than once and removing a com port at the same time may work (has for me).

At the end of all this when the modem ids being recognised (modem diagnostics) you should check your dial up setting and have a gemeral flick through your system to make sure everything is ok.

HTH

50029 2002-05-23 02:03:00 Thanks the advice Murray and all.

I think I solved it by diabling com 1 and 2 in bios as Im not using them and then moving modem to another pci slot and reinstalling.

Now at least the modem and sound have seperate irqs.

So far so good as system seems stable, will keep fingers crossed.
