50281 2002-05-23 01:40:00 Hi.

Athlon 1200MHz
128MB RAM
30GB HD 3 partitions
10/100Mbs Netwrok adapter
56K modem
Win XP Pro dual boot Win ME

ME on C: 2GB
Backup on second HD D: 3GB
Data on E: 23GB
CD-RW on F:
XP on G: 5GB

Have been having trouble with slow start-up.

Thought I had fixed it when reinstalling, but has slowed again.

Have tried all sorts of things including disabling alll startup apps, and disabling the network with no result.

I diasbled all my startup apps, but left the network on, and rebooted. I then opened task manager and wrote down all of the processes that I didn't know what they were.

They are as follows:

SYSTEM
cidaemon
cisv
csrss
dllhost
lsass
mqsvc
mqtgsvc
services
SMSS
snmp
spoolsv
svchost (884K)
svchost (11,752K)
svchost (1,036K)
system
system idle process
winlogon

LOCAL SREVICE
svchost (3,580K)

ADMINISTRATOR
mmc

NETWORK SERVICE
msdtc
svchost (776K)

I know what svchost is, but I didn't expect as many instances of it that is why I included the mem usage for each one.

Which of these can I disable? What do they do? How do I permanently disable them?

What else may be slowing my system? It runs fine once booted up, but I am concerned primarily with the time it spends at the desktop with the hourglass ticking by.

Clean install gives me approx 540-45sec startup - I am now getting 1min 15sec+. that is a slow down of 30sec.

Cheers

50283 2002-05-23 02:08:00 You can certainly disable the cidaemon and cisvc processes a they are the indexing service and can be known to chew up a few resources. They are used by the windows search function among other things to index the contents of your docs and files to enable faster searching.

mqsvc & mqtgsvc are the MS message queing server...not too sure what they do but the developer network do: msdn.microsoft.com

Just looking at the rest and comparing them with what I have running I would say that it is a fairly reasonable number of processes to be running.

Hope you can use something from this.

50284 2002-05-23 03:48:00 Thanks Matt - diabled indexing (unistalled it even) and my boot time is down to 58secs. I can live with this.

Cheers.
