| 50353 | 2002-05-23 09:24:00 | Can someone please enlighten me what this is that my Outpost firewall always blocks?: ICMP Traffic (Reason) | ALL-ROUTERS.MCAST.NET (Remote Host) | Type 10/0 (Remote Port) | Outbound (direction) | ICMP (protocol) I've no idea what this is but it always shows up all the time I'm online. Thanks! |

| 50356 | 2002-05-23 10:31:00 | Hi Susan et al, To find out about Internet Control Message Protocol go to www.freesoft.org/CIE/Topics/81.htm These packages carry network information and the message you are getting indicates that your firewall has been set to block outgoing ICMP packages so that if someone pings you they will get no useful data back from the ping. I don't use outpost so I don't know how to suppress the message sorry, try their help on setting traffic rules. HTH PC |

| 50357 | 2002-05-23 10:34:00 | i can't remember what allrouter multicast ment but basicly outpost and other fire walls block some of the icmp traffic because you use icmp traffic to attack someone. icmp traffic is bacic messaging between pc's eg 3 Destination Unreachable, 11 Time Exceeded, 10 Router Solicitation. sorry only crude explanition. |

Unfortunately I couldn't get to the site you recommended but a search on Google turned up some other info and I think I've got a better idea now. It sounds like it's to prevent a DOS attack from my machine, although I can't see why it needs to be blocked altogether when it could be programmed to block only when a rapid number of pings are going out. At least I don't need to worry about it being a trojan, which I initially thought it might be. :-) |
