50692 2002-05-25 09:51:00 i've just installed a new modem into my new computer...its all connected correctly (i hope) when i try to connect it gets to the 'veryfing user name and password' and my system locks up.
I'm running Windows 98, and the modem type is a Dynalink 56k.

i've tried uninstalling/re-installing as well as removing it thru my comp> properties.

im stumped!
oh the rugbys on...hopefully that will soothe my anger!

thx

50693 2002-05-25 12:34:00 Tones,

I realise how frustrating these kinds of problems can be. I had a hang of a job trying to get a network card to work once and hopefully a few basic tips I picked up from that experience might help you.

It might be worthwhile to check and see if your modem is recognised in the system and working correctly. To do this:
Right click on 'My Computer'/Properties/Hardware Tab (I'm guessing you're using Windows XP but I think it's the same for most versions)

Than choose the 'Device Manager' option - a list of all hardware devices installed on your computer should appear. See if your modem is shown and if when you check its properties if it is properly installed it should say 'This device is working properly'

If this is the case then you don't need to keep installing and uninstalling.

At a brief glance I'd suggest your main problem might be that the driver for your modem is outdated or the wrong driver or something. I'd suggest going to the manufacturer's web site to see if there is a driver update for your version of Windows. These are usually free to download and hopefully should solve your problem.

HTH (learnt the HTH thing from Michael) :)

50694 2002-05-25 12:41:00 FORGIVE ME MIGHTY ONE!!!

I have been privately chastised because I assumed Windows XP when you said you were using Windows 98...

The layout is a little different in that area for 98 but the options you need to follow are roughly the same...

DON'T BEAT ME MASTER PLEASE!!!

PS...hope the rugby lifted your spirits :)

50695 2002-05-25 12:48:00 Sounds to me as though you are using the wrong protocol. Make sure tcp/ip is setup for the modem. If the new modem is dialing and trying to connect but then dumbs you off it could be the wrong protocol. By memory got to control panel/ network and make sure tcp/ip is installed. I'm afraid I can't be more helpful of details as it's been a while since I used win98.

50696 2002-05-26 12:41:00 If the earlier posts don't solve your problem try ringing Dynalink support - they have an 0800 number. I found their support service great. Guest (0)
