50660 2002-05-25 04:35:00 Can some please help me in deciding which files can be deleted in my C://Windows folder (Windows 95b), or tell me where I can get a free program (more effective than Xen, Space Oddessy, etc) which will do it for me? Please explain your answers as simply as possible.

Below is the contents of my C://Windows folder:

50662 2002-05-25 05:21:00 OMG did you type all that out??

I think the best thing you can do is go to Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel and in Windows Setup have a good look through all the options in there.

Decide which features you don't use, untick them and when you click OK the ones you don't want will be removed. That will clear out a lot of the junk in your Windows folder for a start.

I did a search in Google for 'unnecessary windows 95 files' and these two pages look useful:

Just remember that only you can decide what can really go because no one else knows exactly what programs you have running on your machine and wish to keep.

50664 2002-05-25 06:17:00 Basically the only folders you need to worry about in the c:\windows folder are \temp and \temporary internet files.

You can manually go to c:\windows\temp using My Computer and delete all the .tmp files that may be there.
Internet Explorer has the option to delete the files in Temporary Internet Files.
You could also look for ..\cookies, and delete the files in there if you want.

Don't delete anything else, you may lose a vital file or folder.

Otherwise, as Susan says use Add\Remove programs to remove those programs you dont ever use.

Havent used Xen, so dont know what it does exactly, but there are utilities for cleaning out junk files, and also removing orphaned references in the Registry. Maybe Xen does both of those. From what I heard it's supposed to be good.
Tweak'e is the person to ask, but I think Susan also has Xen?

Tread carefully.
It's maybe more important to regularly Scandisk and Defrag.

50665 2002-05-25 09:24:00 i have just deleted all the .tmp, .pvr, .gid, .txt,
.log, etc from my computer, placing them in the recycle bin incase any of them turn out to be needed. i seem to have lot's of .ini files in my Windows directory, can i delete these aswell?

i have another few unrelated questions:

where can i find a copy of Quicktime older than v5? im am wanting to switch back to version for or similar as 5 runs slow on my old computer.

after having previously installed xen, the option to change homepages has been disabled. how can i get this option to work again?

does internet explorer 4.* support frames, etc? i currently have 5.5 after updating sometime ago and am wanting to switch back.
