50584 2002-05-24 11:24:00 Ok starting the computer from a 'complete' shut down, a strange sound comes from the tower casing like a rotating component is off-set or is rubbing. The noise stops when the windows icon appears.
The computer seems to be working fine, and no abnormal crashes, any ideas of what it could be would be great.

Pentium 3 667,
13 gig hard drive,
50x cd rom,
nividia geforce mx 64,
256 ram.

50585 2002-05-24 11:36:00 Face it, its posessed.....

Or..its your CD rom initialising (mine makes a faint rubbing sound on booting with no disc in, its *normal*??)

Put a CD in it when you boot and see if it changes, if no success call in the local exorcist.

50586 2002-05-24 12:05:00 Its highly likely that its your CPU fan. Try opening up the case and making sure that its attached properly and hasnt come loose. if it is fitted properly then i would suggest either a) take it off and grease the bearings or b) buy a new one from Dick Smith or any other computer shop. 50588 2002-05-24 13:21:00 Thks for the replys, reason why this noise has me puzzled is it only occurs when the computer has been shut down for long period of time (over a hour). Guest (0)
50589 2002-05-24 15:00:00 Check the case fan as well - if you have one - and the graphics card fan: let's face it, ALL the fans! Disconnect the case fan if necessary if you think it may be that one (for elimination purposes only), but I wouldn't disconnect the cpu or graphics fans.
Replace with new rather than grease or spray.
Also, check for rattles from the sides of the cases: put your hands on the case to see if you can stop it.
Take the sides off and see if you can locate the noise within. Etc etc.
