| 50710 | 2002-05-25 12:36:00 | OK, have successfully set up my modem using kppp (which made me sign on as root to do it) But, I cannot access kppp as a user - It says I must use my root password to use it? Either, I need to give kppp user execute access (but all the files named kppp that I can locate already have this access allowed), or I am not supposed to use kppp as the dial-up program (but I can't find any other suitable program) I have kde3.0 loaded (but didn't load Gnome due to space issues) If you knoe the answer please give *full* details as I really am a newbie at this :) Thanks |

The (?) second match is 'HOWTO: setup kppp to dialup as normal user'. That will tell you exactly how to do it. Another URL a few down shows you how to do it with the 'su' command. That is not as safe. As you have probably realised, it is a Bad Idea to be root when you are connected to the Internet. (Or whenever it is not absolutely necessary). It's a bit odd for it to be set up this way. It is so dangerous. Maybe the person who set it up to install that way runs as root all the time, and hasn't learned that it is a bad idea. Even Linux programmers can err. Or else they're trying to emulate MS, and leave lots of security holes. |
